A promise that sounds impossible can expose what we really believe. We open Genesis 17:15–27 with Abraham and Sarah, where God renames Sarai as Sarah “princess,” then declares that this elderly, barren couple will have a son. Abraham laughs, suggests a more practical plan through Ishmael, and God answers with a clear “No” and a stronger “Yes” while naming the child in advance: Isaac, “he laughs.” 

Then we zoom into one of the most surprising faith and medicine connections in the Bible. As a physician, I unpack why God’s command to circumcise on the eighth day is not arbitrary: vitamin K, vital for normal blood clotting, is low at birth and rises by day eight. That same reality is why newborns receive a vitamin K injection today, and why missing it can lead to frightening spontaneous bleeding. Scripture and physiology meet in a way that points to a Creator who sees what we cannot. 

We also wrestle with the covenant itself: Isaac is chosen as the heir of the everlasting covenant, yet Ishmael is still heard, blessed, and multiplied. The episode closes with one of the clearest takeaways in the passage: Abraham obeys immediately and leads his whole household to do the same day they receive the command. “Natural” does not automatically mean safe, and kratom is proving that the hard way. A command as personal as circumcision can sound strange, even offensive, until you hear what God is actually doing in Genesis 17. We read verses 9–14 carefully and then zoom out to the bigger storyline: Abraham has waited, prospered, aged, and quietly started to forget the promise but God has not forgotten for a moment. That’s the tension we live in too, when years pass and hope feels thin, yet God keeps saying, “My covenant.”

We talk about why Scripture repeats covenant language so often, and why God loves choosing the small and the weak to show off His strength. From Israel’s calling to the church’s identity, the pattern holds. We bring in 1 Peter 2:9–10 and 1 Corinthians 1:26–31 to answer a hard question: why would God choose people like us? So no one can boast, and so His wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption shine through.

Then we tackle the practical and spiritual layers of circumcision as a covenant sign. Yes, there may be health implications, but the main point is obedience, promise, and protective boundaries that guard what is sacred. We also speak plainly about God’s design for sexuality within marriage, and the real-world damage that follows when that design is ignored.

We end where Deuteronomy leads us: the circumcision of the heart. Only the Holy Spirit can do that delicate spiritual surgery, cutting away pride and stubborn sin so new life can begin. God speaks one sentence that can steady you and unsettle you at the same time: “I am God Almighty… walk before Me and be blameless.” We sit with Genesis 17:1–8 and let the weight of El Shaddai land where it should, not as a slogan, but as the holy name of the One who can actually command righteousness and keep impossible promises.

We trace how God returns to Abram again and again with the same covenant message: blessing, descendants, and an everlasting covenant that does not shrink just because the circumstances look hopeless. Abram is ninety-nine, Sarai is far beyond childbearing years, and yet God repeats the promise and then seals it with a new identity: Abram becomes Abraham, “father of a multitude,” before the fulfillment is visible. Along the way, we talk candidly about reverence, including a real moment of correction that ended a careless habit of speech for good.

A teenager can be loved, funny, respectful at school, and still be in real danger. We talk with Larry Lawrence about Christopher, the son he and his wife adopted and adored, and the heartbreaking day they lost him to suicide at 14. A single sentence can sound wise and still steer your life off a cliff: “God helps those who help themselves.” We open Genesis 16 and watch Sarai and Abram do what so many of us feel tempted to do under pressure, take control, speed up the timeline, and manufacture an outcome that God never asked for.

As we read the story verse by verse, we sit with the real anguish of infertility, the longing behind Sarai’s decision, and the painful power imbalance Hagar endures. Abram believes God, then asks a question many of us are almost afraid to say out loud: “How can I know?” We sit with that moment in Genesis 15:8–21 and trace how God responds not with shame, but with a covenant that speaks in blood, symbols, and unstoppable grace. Along the way, we slow down and explain the ancient covenant ritual of divided sacrifices and what it meant for two parties to walk between the pieces. 

Then the passage gets even more intense: the waiting, the circling birds of prey, the deep sleep, and the terror of great darkness.
