Satisfied a need
This story, while dealing with some very traumatic emotional situations, left me feeling hopeful and upbeat. I am a Pollyanna at heart, and this story was appealing to me. During all the upheavals in the main character's life, she hung in there, allowing life to happen, and yet remain standing, because of wonderful people who cared.. The characters were all quite believable. We have, unfortunately, all seen family members deeply hurt each other. In these stressful times, it was refreshing to read a POSITIVE spin on a negative situation. I found myself really looking forward to reading each chapter. While the outcomes may seem to some to be too good to be true, the story is obviously borne of real situations, it is all plausible, and this is the kind of story that just makes you feel good.
How to Be a Friend to the Newly-Divorced
I loved learning from this inspirational story how people can both help and hurt someone who is in the emotional trauma of a new divorce. So often I have wanted to help when an acquaintance's marriage breaks up, but don't, for fear of meddling. This story shows that you don't have to have the perfect words or the perfect solutions -- just be there, be thoughtful, remember things, listen well -- and let God fill in the cracks. I especially loved the "back story" of the clashes between the heroine and her mom. The story is engaging and well-crafted, though the copyediting at times gave me pause. But those little errors don't detract from the power of the story. I could really see this as a movie!
Loved this book
A lovely, sweet love story. I highly recommend it, and have purchased it for several family members for Christmas.don't miss it. Brought tears to my eyes!
Surprising treatment of divorce recovery
This is the first book I have read by Riedemann. Even though I knew going into the book from others who had read it that her treatment of divorce would take a different twist from other fiction and nonfiction books on the subject I was drawn in by the protaganist, a young woman, whose husband abruptly left her on Christmas day. Riedemann handles the narrative gently and Brittany's path becomes our path as she is led by a source she does not recognize until revealed to her through an epiphany that supercedes divorce or any other life altering event. The message here is hope, redemption, giving to others, and giving ourselves over to a higher power. This is not a spoiler alert; my favorite line in the book is the last line, as it should be.
Side Note: The only reason I did not give "More Than The Sum" five stars is I personally am cynical about five stars. Five stars implies perfection. No book is without some element of less than perfect.
