Daily Devotion – Pentecost Countdown – Day 5

John 16:13 – “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”

The Holy Spirit is at the heart of the event called Pentecost. Pentecost is remembered as the time that the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles in Jerusalem. We hear about the Holy Spirit as part of the trinity but what exactly is it. The event occurs in the Book of Acts, chapter 2.

If ever there is a time that you know to do something is wrong but you are conflicted about doing it, the questioning causing this conflict is called conviction. Your conviction comes from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is with you always and is your God-given Guide to speak louder than any other voice on everyday choices. It would be very hard to truly understand God’s word and desires without your interaction with the Holy Spirit.

Many people who have the Holy Spirit are in constant conflict or are conflicted about decision and direction because they don’t stop and listen to the directives of the Spirit in our lives. God sent the Holy Spirit to be with you, guiding your decisions based on the truth.

Remember, the Holy Spirit is your guide and can be fully heard, felt, and seen in people doing God’s work.

Interesting fact: Many people don’t know, but the room that the Last Supper with Jesus and the Apostles, is actually the same room that Pentecost occurred in after Jesus was crucified and resurrected. Can you imagine what it would have been like to be in the room when the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles? The room is in Jerusalem today and you can visit it. It is actually over the tomb of King David.

Daily Devotion – What’s love got to do with it

If you have read through the Bible, you have found that God cares for his people very much. In so many instances, he specifically states it. You will also find where, just as a Father, he gets upset when his people turn away from Him and don’t do what they have promised to do. Many times, this results in punishment. He also encourages His people with rewards.

The Lord created each of us out of love and gave all of us the potential of being good, even though we inherited sin. The love from God is so great that He believes that we are all worth saving. Even the most evil and corrupt.

So, this seems somewhat hard to believe but He tells us this over and over in the scripture. He believes it so much that He proved it by sending his Son to tell us. As John 3:16 states, he whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life. He did this knowing that His Son would have to be sacrificed as a lamb. That is truly love. You do not have to earn His love. Believe in His Son and know that He loves every single person.

God loves without conditions and as Jesus said, love one another as I have loved you. All you have to do is want it and accept it.

  • 316 Ministry - Morning Faith - Practice God's Word

    Send a text

Yes, we call the Bible the written word of God and of course it is. We, as Christians, believe this unquestionably. We use it for guidance, for inspiration, and for understanding.

It is also known that the word of God is alive and active and it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12. It is the filter by which we should live.

It is important to note that while God’s word is written on paper, it was not meant to stay that way. To truly understand the word of God, you must make the word alive in your heart and actions, and experience it. Then only will you truly understand its meaning.

You will understand that love, as described by Christ, is unconditional to everyone. You will understand how to apply faith to your most troublesome moments in life when you feel like there is no hope, and you will understand that trust is best received when it is given. Obedience to God is not just trying to do the good things but to live as Jesus lived.

To practice God’s word, you must know what it says. If you are using the Bible only to quote verses to yourself or others, you might be missing the big picture. Understand that Jesus lived as an example for us to follow, and that example is written in great detail across four books of the Bible, and it is an incredible experience that is meant for us to fully explore.

For example, do great things in the name of Christ but do them with humility. As it is written, do not brag about the good you do for any reward you seek by bragging is all you will ever get. Something else you will learn. While sin is against God, humility is against Satan. Satan can’t stand to be around humility and will strive to make sure you avoid it just as God gave you his only Son to ensure you had a path away from sin so he could have a relationship with you.

You will also know that faith is not given but comes from inside you and your own understanding. That understanding comes from believing that Christ is the Son of God. Can the word of God help you in your journey to understand faith? For sure but by examples only.

But to truly get it, you will need to practice the scripture with faith and allow God to move in your works so that you can experience the true understanding of God and His wonders. And from the book of John 1:14, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

316 Ministry - Morning Faith – Be Still

"Be still and know that I am God." - Psalm 46:10

In today's fast-paced world, it can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life.

We often fill our days with activity and noise, and we can forget to take time to be still and connect with God.

But Psalm 46:10 reminds us of the importance of stillness.

When we are still, we can hear God's voice more clearly.

We can connect with Him on a deeper level and find peace and rest in His presence.

So, take a moment today to be still.

Turn off the noise around you, quiet your mind, and focus on God.

Know that He is with you always, and that in His presence, you will find the rest and peace your soul longs for.

May we all learn to be still and know that He is God. Amen.

316 Ministry - Morning Faith - Where are you going?

Has your life slipped into a rut? The definition of a rut has been given as, “A grave with the ends kicked out.”

Why am I alive, what is my goal, where am I headed? Have you ever wondered about the answers to these questions? The Bible has the answers.

The Bible talks about the apostle Paul. Paul was born into a position, both socially and politically, that was as privileged as anything that day had to offer. He was born a Roman citizen in a time when the Roman empire encompassed 80 percent of the known world; he was born into a family that could afford to have him taught by the best teachers of the day; he was born into a family that was among the influential group in the Jewish faith, which controlled the Jewish people under the authority of the Roman supervisor of the area. When he was a “young man” he was influential in his own right in the affairs of this powerful body. He was learned, relatively rich, and yet there was no motivating force in his life beyond the desire to persecute Christians which he was very good at.

The on the road to Damascus, Paul met Christ. The effect of this meeting was so great that Paul amazed all of the people that knew him. His persecution of the Christians ceased and he began to preach the way of Christ.

Now he wrote, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain” Philippians 1:21. He felt even dying would profit him for he would go to be with Christ. Now in Christ he lived and moved and had his being.

Paul stated that, “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus” Philippians 3:14. His God given goal was to be “a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God” Romans 1:1. You and I may be called to do various things from missionary work to the job at which we are now working, but we must know Christ in order for Him to give us this higher purpose.

Christ can do for each of us that which He did for Paul, give us a meaning, an objective, and a joy in life. However, the thing that separates us from Christ is sin. This applies to all people in the world. “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23.

But God, because of his love for us, has made provision for our salvation. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8.

Christ has made payment for our sins and all we have to do is take the gift by acknowledging that we have sinned and asking for forgiveness.

As with Paul, a choice to follow Jesus can be just the change in our life’s focus that we need to provide purpose and motivation.

Where are you prepared to go to get out of the rut?

  • 316 Ministry - Morning Faith - Why do I always worry

    Send a text

Today we will be talking about one of the biggest mental health issues which is so common in our culture but it is often overlooked and ignored.

According to the World Health Organization, Americans have a bigger problem with worry than people in any other country.

Because of a sinful nature of worry, we tend to default to fear and not faith. This is pretty obvious when we realize we are not awake at 2 am trying to figure out how to manage peace and joy.

We tend to experience worry in our minds. We generally experience anxiety in our bodies. Worry is often very specific to something and anxiety is generally broad. Examples might be that you are worried about missing a flight and anxious is more about traveling the entire trip.

An approach to consider is to take a few minutes and write down the top worries you have in your life right now.  It is important to be honest because these are your current vulnerabilities.

Now, you can take your list and compare it with some of the five biggest topics that most of us worry about. Finances, food, fitness, fashion, and future.

There are many areas in the Bible that Jesus tells us not to worry. Let’s get specific…

Finances - Matthew 6:24 “…You can’t serve both God and money. [Finances]”
Food, Fitness, Fashion – Matthew 6:25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; [Food] or about your body [Fitness], what you will wear [Fashion].”
Future – Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow [Future], for tomorrow will worry about itself…”

If your problem has a solution, why worry. If your problem does not have a solution, why worry.

Jesus makes a convincing argument as to why we shouldn’t worry.

Matthew 6:26 “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?”

Today, you might think about things as Concern and Worry.
Concern: My marriage is struggling… Worry: I will lose my wife.
Concern: I gained 12 pounds… Worry: I am going to start having health issues.

Change your thinking to Concern and Action.
Concern: My marriage is struggling… Action: Get counseling.
Concern: I gained 12 pounds… Action: Cut back on soft drinks.

Concern focuses on challenges and moves you to action. Worry focuses on what’s beyond our control and results in inaction.

Matthew 6:27 “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?”

Just remember, worry actually makes mental health worse.

God is not going to let you down. It might not be the answer that you are expecting but it will always be the right answer. You are very valuable to Him.

When you worry, you are basically saying:

  • 316 Ministry - Morning Faith - Battling Depression

    Send a text

We know that metal health is not common to talk about in Church. We deal with worry which if chronically neglected, can be traumatic and lead to complete burnout.

There is a close friend, we will call him Tim. He has been a friend for over 15 years and is among the nicest, most uplifting, generous, encouraging person you have ever met.

Tim is one of those people that everyone likes right away and you will always want to be friends with. He is always making the conscious choice from the time that he gets out of bed to give full energy to everything he is doing all the while he is smiling.

However, his inside feelings are dark, sadness, and a feeling of hopelessness. He has spent years battling suicidal thoughts and deals with ongoing, chronic, crippling depression.

For anyone that hasn’t experienced depression, they can be very dismissive and the usual attitude is to just cheer up or get over it.

Depression is not just sadness or discouragement but is a constant darkness, numbness, lack of motivation, and just no hope that things are going to get better.

Church should be a safe place to talk about depression. Sadly, it usually isn’t because of the inevitable stigma of just suck it up, get over it, put faith in Jesus.

When you have a sore throat, you go see a physician. If you break a bone, you go to a surgeon. If you battle depression, your expected to just keep smiling and keep it to yourself.

If you are one that is in the fight to battle depression, which is one of the biggest mental health issues today, you might be able to identify with the next verse and it also might make you a bit mad.

Proverbs 12:25 “Anxiety weights down the hear, but a kind word cheers it up.”

It can’t be that simple? The first part is for sure… but a kind word? The important thing to remember is that the scripture above is God’s word. Maybe a good word brings Hope and maybe a good word will bring some healing.

Anyone that’s experienced depression knows that it is a very complex issue. Depression doesn’t discriminate and there is no one size fits all.

There are two truths to remember when you’re battling depression:

    1.     Your emotions are valid…
    2.     Your situation feels hopeless…

But that is actually incomplete. If we complete the thought…

    1.     Your emotions are valid, but they are not permanent.
    2.     Your situation feels hopeless, but with God, there’s always hope.

Remember, your spiritual enemy wants to destroy anything that is precious to God. That includes you. When you feel depressed, call it what it is. I am depressed! Then do something about it. Go talk to a councilor. Surrender to God. You will find victory in God.

Say this to yourself. You can even preach this to yourself!

“You O Lord, you are a shield about me and my glory. You are the lifter of my head when my mind is troubled. You are my refuge and my strength and my ever-present help in time of trouble. For I’m convinc

  • 316 Ministry - Morning Faith - Heal my Anxious Mind

    Send a text

Philippians 4:4-6 “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Many people today are feeling unusually anxious. That includes feeling afraid, weight on your shoulders, overwhelming uneasiness… But Christians shouldn’t have anxiety! Right? Many say, just give it to God.

We feel deflated, hurt, angry… Is it possible to actually not feel anxious about anything? We have bills to pay, kids to raise, relational issues, health challenges, job stress, inflation, and what about the price of eggs or a gallon of milk?

If you say you have plenty to be anxious about, you are not alone…

We are coming out of the Pandemic which made things that much worse. Just trying to adjust to our new normal.

This anxiety is extremely complex. It is all over the anxiety spectrum. Everyone has some or occasional which includes uneasiness and discomfort. Other have textbook anxiety. Even other still have extreme presentations such as a crushing and debilitating dread, shortness of breath, heart rate rises, feeling like the walls are closing in, and you just can’t function in a normal capacity.

So here it is, God cares and wants to help. Anxiety isn’t a sin. It is a symptom which should be interpreted as a signal that your body needs some attention. Just at the red light on the dashboard of your car tells you that there might be something wrong with your engine. In both cases, don’t focus on the alarm, seek the solution.

2 Chronicles 20: 6-9 tells us that God is all powerful which no one can withstand, and that he will fight for us, and if we cry out to God in distress, he will hear us and save us.

God cares and if it is on your mind, it is on God’s heart! If it is big enough to worry about, it is big enough to pray about.

Remember, it is not a sin to be anxious, it is a signal to seek help. So, pray to God, then take it back. Own it and know that you can do it with God’s help. First step, pause and clear your mind. Second step, don’t dwell on the negative. Your brain will get very use to that. Focus on the positive. Get your brain use to that instead. Change your brains diet. Seek some professional help from a counselor who explores the root of your anxiety. Don’t be afraid.

Pray to God, Pause for clarity, and Praise God!

Philippians 4:7 “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 “May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.”

You might be a Christian, you look healthy, your Marriage is doing well, everything is great… but inside, pure panic… Life is just too much, you can’t keep up, and often times you feel like you can’t go on… You might even feel like the only relief is just to die. This is, often times, way too real!

You know you are a strong person but you feel like you need help but you are ashamed, embarrassed… it just isn’t right… you are a Christian.

Sadly, some of you can relate. You look pretty good on the outward side but in inside is a wreck. Your depressed, anxious, stressed, worn down… Just know, you are not alone.

Mental health is only gotten from Peace of Mind. However, one of the most dangerous myths of mental health is that you can just pray and everything will be better. It is often believed that the Church should not talk about mental health issues. Come to Jesus and he will fix everything… Jesus has the power to save you, redeem you, fill you with Holy God power! These are all very good things and true but they are a bit incomplete when we talk about mental health. Just because Jesus saved you, doesn’t mean that He fixes every area in your life. Remember, it is because of God’s will that things happen, not yours.

Just because you are a Christian doesn’t mean “Instant Mental Health.”

So, how can you fight against mental health?

Remember, God is not afraid of our honesty and He cares if you are hurting because when you hurt, He hurts. Love God and serve God! Not mental health! There are many things that can impact mental health.

If you are struggling, that doesn’t mean you are not a good Christian. It just means you are human. Getting help isn’t a sign of weakness. It’s a sign of wisdom.

Lean into God and Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind.

Isaiah 26:3“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
