  • Massey police station flags at half mast after officer death
    West Aucklanders are rallying around their local police officers as they come to terms with the killing of a young constable during a routine traffic stop.
    A 24-year-old man has been charged with murdering 28-year-old Matthew Hunt.
    A 30-year-old woman has also been arrested in relation to the shooting and is due to appear in court this morning.
    At the Henderson Police station, the flags are being flown at half mast and locals have continuing to stop by - leaving flowers and paying their respects.

    The National Party says the government's mishandling of the border will cost New Zealanders jobs, by damaging the economy and delaying the reopening of the country.
    Economists generally agree that unemployment could spiral to unprecedented levels if New Zealand were to enter lockdown again.

  • Shane Jones blames iwi and DoC for Taranaki Crossing delays
    The Regional Economic Development Minister has blamed iwi sensitivities and Department of Conservation red tape for the lack of progress on the $13.3 million Taranaki Crossing project.
    Ngati Ruanui chief executive and Maori Party co-leader, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, revealed last week she waited five months for a reply to Official Information Act request seeking to find out how the money was being spent, and says she is still not clear on where it went.
    Shane Jones told RNZ Taranaki Whanganui reporter Robin Martin that Ngarewa-Packer was being disingenous.

  • Redcliffs school moves to new site nine years after quakes
    A Christchurch primary school is moving into its permanent new home today, nine years after cliffs behind it collapsed during the city's earthquakes.
    Redcliffs School subsequently moved to a temporary location in the suburb of Sumner, but the new location will mean the school will return home to Redcliffs, after a land swap with the local park.
    The move comes after in 2016, the then National Government, overturned its own decision to close the school.
    Christchurch reporter Anan Zaki spoke to principal Rose McInerney ahead of today's move.

  • German Coronavirus numbers jump
    Health officials in Germany say the coronavirus reproduction number, or R-number, has jumped to almost 1.8.
    That's the highest value since the middle of March and means the virus is almost doubling in the rate that it spreads.
    The increase has been caused by localised outbreaks, with most of the cases in northwestern Germany where more than 1000 people working at a meat-processing plant tested positive.

  • British police treat Reading stabbings as terrorist incident
    The British police say they are treating the killing of three people in a park in Reading on Saturday as a terrorist incident.
    Three other people were injured in the series of stabbings.
    Police are now questioning a man on suspicion of murder - he has been named as 25-year-old Khairi Saadallah.
    London correspondent Vincent McAviney speaks to Corin Dann.
