  • Coronavirus: Siouxsie Wiles on virus elimination
    It's official - today is Elimination Day.
    It's been 28 days since the last case of community transmission of Covid-19.
    That means the chain of transmission has been broken and we've eliminated the novel coronavirus.
    Except people are still arriving through our border so the Ministry of Health says it is not trumpeting the milestone, and instead is focusing on efforts to prevent any new cases from coming in.
    Dr Siouxsie Wiles is an infectious diseases specialist from Auckland University.

  • NZ protests call on govt to condemn US police
    Organisers of the Black Lives Matter protests in New Zealand are calling on the government to condemn police violence in the US, and disarm the police in New Zealand.
    They say New Zealand isn't exempt from the structural racism that's ignited demonstrations in the United States.
    Thousands protested in Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin yesterday, as anger over the killing of George Floyd by Minneapolis police continues.
    Mackenzie Smith was at the Auckland protest, and filed this report.

  • Atlanta becomes flashpoint for Black Lives Matter movement
    Altanta, Georgia is the latest flash point in America's on-going battle over police brutality and the killings of African Americans.
    Over the weekend 27-year old Rayshard Brooks was killed by police at a Wendy's drive-thru.
    Brooks had run from the police after failing a sobriety check and taking an officer's Taser.
    The officer who shot and killed Brooks has been fired and the Atlanta police chief has stepped down. Protesters have taken to streets in Atlanta and shut down a highway.
    The Wendy's where Brooks died was set ablaze.
    At one point, police used tear gas and fireworks to disperse a crowd of protesters.

  • Expert says offer of help with dolphin protection plan was ignored
    An international marine expert has waded in on debate over the science underpinning a plan to save Maui and Hector's dolphins, saying she tried to help, and was ignored.
    The plan - which remains before ministers - has been the subject of scientific squabbling with its claim that a disease caused by cat poo kills more of the endangered dolphins than fishing boats.

  • Children missing out on education after border closure
    A school principal says children whose families are locked out of the country by border closures are missing out on their education.
    He has two students living in a shed in South Africa trying to keep up with their schoolwork.
    The Government says it is considering those people on work visas who were out of the country when the border closed, and have not been let back in.

  • London protesters clash over statues
    Far-right protesters and anti-racism demonstrators clashed repeatedly in London over the weekend with police trying to keep the two sides apart.
    Hundreds of people wearing football shirts, chanting "Eng-ger-land, Eng-ger-land", and describing themselves as patriots, gathered alongside military veterans to guard statues in the city's centre.
    The debate over monuments to those involved in Britain's imperialist past is raging in the UK, especially after the statue of slave trader Edward Colston was torn down and thrown into Bristol harbour last weekend.
    London's Metropolitan Police said 100 people were arrested for offences including "violent disorder," assault on the police, possession of a weapon and drunkenness.
