  • Gun owners face off against government over more law changes
    Gun owners are at odds with the government over proposals for the newest tranch of changes revamping firearms legislation.
    The police minister is pushing for the addition of a gun register and a number of other additions to firearms laws that weren't added when military style semi-automatic weapons were banned last year.
    But on the back of staunch opposition from gun owners, the National Party and ACT are opposing the bill.

    Economists here say the government should not follow Australia's lead, with a widespread stimulus package to counter the economic hit from the coronavirus.
    Yesterday Australia's Prime Minister unveiled a $17.6 million package, including one-off cash payments of $750 for every beneficary, and cash injections of up to $25,000 for small and medium businesses.
    Westpac chief economist Dominick Stephens told political reporter Yvette McCullough that isn't the route New Zealand should be taking.

    Shares around the world are in free-fall as the spread of coronavirus brings the world economy to a halt. At the start of US trading, shares plunged and triggered a trading halt in an attempt to curb panicky selling.
    When trade resumed, shares continued to fall, following European markets lower.
    The initial declines came after the US President Donald Trump restricted travel from mainland Europe.

  • Covid-19: Schools cancel overseas trips
    Schools are cancelling class trips overseas because of travel restrictions and insurance problems related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
    Many schools have been trying to decide what to do about trips that leave in the next month or two to destinations in Europe and North and South America.
    Richard Dykes from the Auckland Secondary Principals Association told RNZ education correspondent, John Gerritsen, that increasingly they are deciding not to go ahead.
