  • Counties Manukau women had breast cancer diagnoses delayed
    The Cancer Society's head Mike Kernaghan says South Auckland women who've had their cancer diagnoses delayed are the victims of a borderline third world health system.
    Thirty-five women at Counties Manukau DHB had delayed breast cancer diagnoses last year because of long waiting lists.
    The health minister David Clark says he expects the DHB to improve its performance but the board says it needs funding and resources.
    Kernaghan told RNZ Health Correspondent Rowan Quinn New Zealanders should be worried.

  • Former Warriors player allegedly behind fire that killed his family
    An apparent family violence incident in Brisbane has resulted in the deaths of three children under 10, their mother and their father.
    It's alleged Rowan Baxter, a former New Zealand Warriors player, set alight a car carrying himself, his former wife Hannah Baxter and their three children.
    A neighbour told the ABC that everyone is devastated by what has happened.

  • Wanaka locals oppose proposed airport expanson
    Wanaka residents are fuming about what they see as a lack of consultation over a plan to expand the airport.
    The council organised two meetings this week - one in Wanaka and one in Frankton - but allowed only one member from each community group to attend.

  • Hawke's Bay kaumatua criticises Oranga Tamariki
    A Hawkes Bay kaumatua says the whānau of a boy severely beaten are distraught and devastated and says Oranga Tamariki need to accept responsibility for their part in the case. 
    The police say they haven't been able to work out how the four-year-old suffered such extensive injuries, including severe brain damage, at his house.
    It's understood the boy was returned to the household, in which he was injured in June last year, without consultation with whānau, some of who opposed his return. 
    A kaumatua and community leader, Des Ratima, has been supporting the whānau. 
    He spoke to Māni Dunlop about the case and how he believes Oranga Tamariki need to step up.

  • School principals wrestle with enrolling violent kids
    More now on our earlier story on schools increasingly resisting attempts to make them enrol children who have been kicked out of other schools for violent behaviour.
    Primary school principals say they are facing a "growing sea of violence" and the Education Ministry has told MPs it is having diffculty directing schools to enrol violent students.

  • National Party can't separate itself from fraud charges against Jami-Lee Ross - expert
    An electoral law expert says the National Party can't entirely wash its hand of the fraud charges laid against Jami-Lee Ross.
    Ross used to be a National Party MP but is now independent.
    He's named as one of four people facing charges in relation to two $100,000 donations to the National Party.
    The three other defendants are Yikun Zhang, Shi-jia Zheng, and Hengjia Zheng.
    The charges relate to separate donations made in June 2017 and June 2018.

  • Wuhan evacuees spend first night back home
    It has just been the first night home since 27 December for Lily Gao and her two-year-old daughter. The pair are finally home in Auckland after their evacuation from China and quarantine in Whangaparaoa.
    RNZ has been talking to Lily since the end of January when she first found herself under lockdown in Wuhan because of the coronavirus outbreak.

  • Auckland Council pushing back on govt prefab plan
    The Auckland Council is pushing back at the Government's plans to get thousands of prefab homes built here to tackle the housing crisis.
    It has sent government officials a video link to disastrous housing developments in Britain, to warn of dangers ahead.
