  • Tauranga shoot out death 'sobering' - resident
    A Bethlehem resident says last night's shooting is sobering for the community.
    One man was fatally wounded by police after a car chase, in connection with the double homicide at McLaren Falls earlier this week.
    The car was spotted by police on the corner of Bellevue and Otumoetai roads, but when the car didn't pull over, police chased the vehicle down Carmichael Road.
    Police say the offender leaned out of the window several times and fired shots at the police car while driving.
    At one stage the man got out of his car and fired directly at officers, before getting back into the car and continuing down the road.
    Colin Dougherty - who lives on the road and saw the cars drive by - says it all happened very quickly.

    A groundbreaking school that puts a green ethos at the centre of its learning is celebrating its opening in Taranaki today.
    The Green School New Zealand has a focus on sustainability, but it doesn't come cheap with enrolment and tuition fees costing up to $40,000 for some overseas students.

  • Report calls for debt to income limits, CGT due to housing boom
    A new report into New Zealand's shortage of affordable housing calls for debt-to-income limits for high-income households and a capital gains tax.
    The study says a decades-long boom in property investment has driven up housing and land prices at the expense of families and people's basic need for shelter.
    Dr Jenny McArthur wrote the report for the Helen Clark Foundation.

    An immensely powerful new housing and development agency is already allegedly causing ructions, accused of poaching key staff from local councils.
    Kainga Ora will combine the state house aims of the defunct Housing New Zealand, with the power to set rates, change bylaws and do its own building consents nationwide.

  • Tauranga road closed after fatal police shoot out
    Tauranga commuters face massive disruption this morning with a main road blocked off following a fatal police shoot out last night.
    A man is dead after officers tried to stop a car as part of their investigation into the killing of two men on Tuesday. Diversions are in place but people are being are being warned to avoid the area or delay travel.

  • Moriori descendants meet Crown to sign $18 million settlement
    More than a hundred years since Moriori were slaughtered, enslaved and falsely classified as extinct, a true account of their story is about to be entrenched in the law.
    Moriori descendants and representatives of the Crown will meet in Rekohu or the Chatham Islands today for the signing of the Moriori Treaty Settlement.
    It includes an agreed historical account, a Crown apology, and $18 million.

  • Dame Noeline Taurua on Halberg Awards win
    The Silver Ferns efforts to dust themselves off after an abysmal Commonwealth Games and win a World Cup just fifteen months later, was recognised with an extremely successful haul at the Halberg Awards last night.
    The netballers are the Supreme Award winners and their coach, Dame Noeline Taurua, is coach of the year.
    New Zealand's leading netballers are also team of the year and their World Cup win was voted by the public as their favourite sporting moment.
