Morning Stretches

Listen Later

In this episode Abby and Corey take you through some of the top morning stretches athletes can do to help prime their body for the day!  Enjoy

  1. Child’s pose into Cat/Cow
    1. Child’s Pose is a great one to start with in the morning because it gets your lower back, hips, quads and ankles. If you sleep in weird positions this will help get in alignment to start your day. Child’s pose also promotes blood flow and circulation to the head. Many people just jump right into their day but this really warms up the body and gets everything flowing properly to lessen the morning fatigue. From here you can go right into a cat/cow rotation by popping up onto the hands. This stretch sets you up for good posture and balance in your day. It is just a continuation of child's pose with some activation in all those same muscle groups.
  2. Downward Dog
    1. Downdog continues the blood flow in the morning while now also stretching the chest and shoulders. Basically working up the body from childs pose. This will align the spine even more so if you were having any weird tossing and turning in your sleep or did a heavy back workout the day before. Having your heart above your head to start your day increases blood flow to the brain and has you ready to go all day long.
  3. Squat hold
    1. The squat hold is going to increase your strength and power and get the body ready to move. This position should loosen up some stiffness from sleep and continue opening up the body to be ready for use.

All three of these stretches are great for balance, posture, and blood flow which is why we want to start the day off with them.
