Those who abide in Jesus now will be ready to meet Him when He returns. Because we are learning to know, trust, and remain in Christ today, His coming will not bring confusion or shame, but confidence before the One we already know. And this abiding relationship with Jesus produces a life increasingly marked by His righteousness, revealing that we have truly been born of Him.

There is only one true gospel: Jesus as God in the flesh who lived, died, and rose. Any “new” or altered version is darkness and death, no matter how compelling. Believers, already anointed and indwelled by the Spirit, are called to abide in the Spirit, the Word, and biblical community so that this unchanging gospel continually informs every circumstance of life, producing stability, contentment, and faithfulness.

Remain rooted in the foundational truth of Jesus, because as you abide in that truth and practice spiritual disciplines (Scripture, community, repentance, worship), you show evidence of genuine union with the Son and the Father. This abiding produces not just future life after death but a present, transformative quality of life— peace, joy, and spiritual fruit, that confirms God is at work in you.

The “last hour” is the whole period between Jesus’ ascension and return, marked by a divide between those who hold to the true Christ and “antichrists” who reshape or deny Him, often from within the church. Believers are called to be urgently vigilant, deeply grounded in the real Jesus and the gospel so they can discern and reject false teaching while still loving those who are deceived.

True flourishing does not come from ideal circumstances but from trusting and walking in the way of Jesus, whose love and promises secure both our present and eternal life. Believers are called to reject the “world” as the rebellious order that seeks life through experience, possession, and status, and instead reorder their loves around God, filling their lives with His Word and ways, which alone abide forever.

Life is full of real and perceived dangers, but beneath every “dangerous chapter” is a completely safe story because God has us securely in His care. God has already claimed His people, carries them all the way home, and will not fail them, even when they feel overwhelmed or faithless.

John composes a poem to demonstrate to his readers the blessings they possess in Christ! He addresses the young believers, reassuring them that their sins have been forgiven. This fundamental truth serves as the cornerstone of our faith as followers of Jesus. John also reminds the young men and women of their triumph over the enemy. To the Fathers and mothers, he emphasizes that the God we worship is the same God who has loved and protected us from the very beginning. Through these various reminders, John conveys to us that regardless of the ups and downs, trials and joys we may encounter, we are eternally secure in our status as those who have been sealed in Jesus.

John reminds his readers that love is the primary indicator of being in Christ. He emphasizes that the natural progression of being connected to the God of love is to embody great love. However, he warns us that those who harbor hatred towards fellow believers demonstrate a lack of understanding of the God they profess to follow. As followers of Jesus, let us strive to remain connected to the vine, enabling us to bear the fruit of love.

Oftentimes in our modern cognitive approach, we separate the spiritual from the lived experience. We buy into the concept of “brains on sticks.” But what if God created us as embodied beings? Able to live fully with and for him? Holistic discipleship is the process of the love and shalom of God transforming us and renewing us into the person we were always meant to be. It is the process of being made into the image of the Son, and the Spirit dwells within us, molding us, shaping us, growing us into a more Christ-like soul, mind, and body. A person whose inner life is reflected by their outer life.

John writes, continuing his affectionate fatherly tone, urging this community to consider life in Christ. Reiterating three times that a true knowing of Christ will produce fruit. A deep, sustaining, abiding, intimate relationship with Christ results in a life lived and seen differently. John writes not to invoke fear or anxiety about the steadfastness of a relationship with Christ, but to ask his community if they know Christ, or simply know about him.
