Ahhhh, the turning of another year. The turning of the calendar offers hope of new things to come. Because of that, so many people make resolutions to make big changes. However, so many don't follow through with them. What if 2024 was different? What if, this year, you resolve to seek wisdom in your life? Imagine what a year of searching, learning, and engaging the wisdom from the Bible would look like one year from now. What would exploring Biblical wisdom cause you to change in your life?

For hundreds of years, God had been silent. Israel was waiting for the promised Messiah to come. Finally, the time arrived. Angels announced Him, shepherds came to see Him, and magi came to worship Him. The Messiah was here, but Israel was looking for the wrong thing. They wanted a king that was a powerful warrior and leader. Instead, the Messiah came as a humble servant, who would die so His people could live. So many of us miss the true Jesus all these years later. This Christmas, are you searching for the true King, or are you looking in the wrong direction?

When told that she was going to be the mother of the Son of God, Mary rushes to her cousin Elizabeth’s house to find her 6 months pregnant, just like the angel had said. Elizabeth is overcome by the Holy Spirit and blesses Mary and confirms the angel’s announcement. Mary responds with a song that worships God, speaks of His works in the past, and what the ministry of her son will be in the future. God’s use of a humble, ordinary person for extraordinary things once again shows us how the kingdom of God flips the world’s value system upside down.

Nativity scenes are everywhere in the Christmas season. We see a smiling, reverent Mary looking down at her new born son, while Joseph and animals look on. What we fail to recognize, is how Mary responds to the calling God gave her to be the mother of God’s son. This calling was not safe, secure, or known. On top of that, it would require more bravery and obedience then we could imagine. How will this no-name, young Jewish virgin respond to the call God had on her life?

We’ve all seen the Christmas classic, A Christmas Carol. We know how it goes – old miser Scrooge refuses to help others, and has used his life to collect as much wealth as he can for himself. In the process he lost who he really was and his love of Christmas. We see him as such a villain…but if we are honest, we have some of the same tendencies. Greed creeps into lives in different ways and betrays us, giving us a false sense of control. We want to have all our needs met by our own doing, because that gives us safety. However, Jesus has instructed us to be calm and trust God for his daily provision. Greed and thankfulness are in opposition to each other in our hearts, who is going to wini?

This week, as we continue our series Seven Words to the Church Today, we visit the Church of Laodicea and Jesus’ letter to them in the book of Revelation. This church had a problem being pleasing to Jesus, and it has everything to do with their connection to Him. Is this a problem that we have today? Find out as we look at this letter together…

The church in Sardis had quite the reputation. They were known for doing amazing things, but Jesus saw otherwise. He saw them for who they truly were, and they were dying spiritually. To turn it around, the church would need to repent and a return back to being guided by the Holy Spirit.
