A good story
Love this book. My husband is a fireman and we love to buy any children's books that talk about how brave our firemen are.
Such a fun book
We love this book. We first got it from the library with the accompanying aduio recording and fell in love with it. The illustrations are great, the story is not boring or overly simplified and Mose is quite the humble hero.
A Funny Tall Tale for New York Lovers
Eric Metaxas proves his artistic versatility with this sprightly, irreverent rendition of the popular folk tale Mose the Fireman. A codgerly narrator mixes modern slang into his tale of Mose, the larger-than-life hero who manages to propose to his sweetheart Lize while saving the city from fire, draining the Hudson River, and singlehandedly digging the tunnel that becomes the subway system. Unlike other versions, this story doesn't end with tragedy, but with a happy wedding scene. The text rolls along jauntily, and Everett Peck's amusing illustrations evoke just the right mood.
The book itself doesn't need improvement, but there is a DVD and CD narration available through Rabbit Ears Entertainment, and there's more where that came from -- it's part of a larger collection of American folktales.Rabbit Ears Treasury of Tall Tales: Volume Two: Mose the Fireman, Stormalong
Riotous Romp Through New York in the 1800s!
This is such a delightfully fun and colorful story and the illustrations by Everett Peck are pitch perfect. And in the DVD and CD versions, there is glorious rag-time music and less-than-stodgy narration of the identical text as used in the book by none other than... Michael Keaton! The same illustrations used in the book are "gently" animated in the DVD--not the jarring rapid fire animation so common on kids' TV these days--yet perfectly suited to the comedy and outrageousness of the story. There is even an ebook version in the Kindle store that is true to the hard cover book.
Four Stars
Cute story!
