Fascinating

Must read...could not put it down!

Anyone wanting an inspiring history account of the conditions between the North and the South should consider this autobiographical story. Educators and historians will love this book....make your students read this...black and white people. This is about the rise of all people from the slavery condition. Booker T. Washington and his wife were incredible people!

Inspiring and Thought-provoking!

This is one of the best books I have ever read it is a firsthand account of what it was like to be a slave during the time of the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation. Southern slaves were "freed" before the Northern slaves.

The insights into the issue of slavery and the comparison to the biblical Joseph are thought-provoking. Booker T. views the enslavement of his people as Providential as the blacks who came to America live better than those in the "fatherland" of Africa where one in five children died before they reach age 5.

Every student of history should read this book. I highly recommend it.

Goodness Triumphs Over Evil

Inspiring story of how hard work, attitude, love and respect and forgiveness is a powerful tool to heal and grow a nation and a race. History would thwart much of the tremendous work of this man. Sad commentary, but hopeful message for the future.

This book was amazing. Booker T. Washington didn't waste a minute and was an honest, hardworking man. We could all learn a lesson from him. He worked to educate his people in all sorts of ways, even in building the housing, schools, and growing their own food in a garden. He worked to make them self-sufficient in their lives. He would not be happy with the way his people are being raised now. He was an excellent man. A book well worth reading...and a good book for students also.

Hilarious, inspiring, fun!

Who was your favorite character and why?

I love Mike and his wife! They are the perfect pair.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I definitely felt tears at the end when he reminisced on the past events! I'm a crier haha, but it was a very good read and I was sad to see it end. To give up everything you know for a complete change of life - wow!! Inspiring.

This book is full of fun facts on boating, history, France, etc! My brother was sucked in and listened to parts with me also. He was very impressed with all the knowledge the author shared.

That being said, there is a great amount of humor incorporated also. I was constantly laughing out loud while listening to this! When they go to church to pray for wine - oh my gosh haha!! "Cheers, Jesus!"

You get to meet a wide array of interesting characters. And I really enjoyed the music between chapters! The author is a fantastic narrator as well. I wouldn't hesitate to listen to another book written or narrated by him.

An enjoyable travel bite

First I need to say that I received this book for a discount in return for my review. I loved listening to this book for a few reasons. 1. The author is also the narrator and he has a wonderful accent. 2. His cadence is wonderful. 3. The story is true which makes the listening that much more enjoyable. The misadventures and ports that are visited make you feel as if you are hanging out on the boat with the author. The only thing I didn't like as much is that there is a slightly cheesy, almost accordion sounding, parisian music intro to each chapter. Overall it is a very enjoyable listen if you enjoy accents, travel, and feeling as if you are hearing a story from a friend.

I suppose they enjoyed it

There's not much you can say about this book. It's quirky and quite amusing but for me the style is too much along the lines of what I'd call journo speak. It reads like a magazine feature or newspaper column or even one of those television documentaries such as 'Wish you were here'. Not really for me at all. too much name dropping and you feel that at any moment it's going to descend in to interview mode. 'Tell me, how did you enjoy your experience in france'?

Good and interesting but a bit slow

I really liked it! a bit slow at times but very insightful and interesting for someone hwo has barely ever talked to a religious person. The language is great and I really enjoyed the dialogues. However the story is not really going enywhere, which I guess is because it is a biography type book.

Heartbreakingly Beautiful

Maggie's struggle for spiritual assurance is powerful to read. I believe her story will help in my own spiritual quagmire. I hope it will for you, too.

This is a dark and depressing look into the authors life and his expectations for life after 60. He bemoans just about everything regarding growing old and his lot in life. This is against a back drop of long wonderful trips and interesting experiences. Yuck skip this one!

What were the experiences of non-Nazi Germans living in Germany during WWII

The is an interesting book which illustrates the human weaknesses in the face of evil and the need to protect ones family. The Nazi experience shows how many fell to participation of some of the worst of evil, some pretended that it wasn't happening (often to protect themselves and their families), some stood up to face the evil at the peril of their own lives. People like Bonnhoffer and Helmuth Hubener shine the light on the best of human character. I would like to think I would be like them, but this story shows what many of us would choose when looking into the face of pure evil

I have traveled the world and read an array of travel essays. This book unfortunately did not capture me nor draw me in.

What could Sarah Marquis and Stephanie Hellert - Translator have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

It read too much like a dry, unemotional journal where she took her notes from her travels and just put them in sentence form. I'm not sure how it could have been changed to make it more enjoyable. It just seemed "off" overall to me.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Emily Lawrence?

Anyone but her. I did not like her monotone breathiness at all. It made me felt completely detached from the experiences the author had. I could not connect to the story because of the narrator.

You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The redeeming quality is that normally I am drawn to this type of book and experience. I thought how can I go wrong with this book? The cover art is the best thing about it unfortunately.

A good book but .....read before purchasing

What did you like best about Wild by Nature? What did you like least?

First off, it is a good read/listen. If you are looking for a travelogue by someone like yourself, an average Joe that decided it was time to do something exciting and leave their life to pursue some type of adventure, you will be disappointed. The author is a professional traveler. I got the sense that it was written from the perspective of someone that, although she has a love of travel, does it because it is her profession. She has sponsors and and a person to run her expedition.

Last time I was not able to stop listening to an audio book was when I was listening to the Martian by Andy Weir.

Richard's book is beyond inspiring!

The Modern Day Explorer

Richard Garriott is a great example of a modern say explorer. I am a fan of videogames, and an interview between Richard Garriott and gaming news engine IGN is how I found out about him and his book. Great story and would recommend!

Re-living my travel adventure and insights

What did you love best about Travel as Transformation?

The author manages to elegantly express some of the same experiences and emotions I've had living as a global traveler for almost two years. I've been considering writing about it, but this one will be hard to beat. I was honestly surprised at how well Diehl managed to express some of the deeper insights from leaving your culture behind and immersing yourself in new ones.

What other book might you compare Travel as Transformation to and why?

I first read Vagabonding, by Potts, which has a similar theme, but I found that Travel as Transformation gave a more in-depth look as what can happen to your core, your values and your sense of self during long-time travel and remote work&living, and so the two books really cover the topic in two unique ways.

Which scene was your favorite?

I must say that my favorite part was then Diehl described the realization that "we" (any of us) don't really come from the place in the world with the best answers to lifes questions - we only think we do. I recognize this in a lot of my friends and family who tend to think so highly or their own culture, and less of others, in the must subtle way. "We are fortunate to live in the best country on earth" people say (and granted, Scandinavia has a lot going for it). But no culture is really better (non-free societies aside), they're just diffent.
