Short and helpful introductory history

Review of AMERICAN HISTORY by Andrew White

A short history of the United States, from before its commencement as a nation, up to the present day, this manual highlights major events and personalities. Readers looking for an easy to absorb brief history will find this a useful reference. Those needing more detailed background may utilize this book as a jumping-off point for further research.

Every time I begin to read about the history of what is now America, the text all says basically the same thing ... That Columbus "discovered" the land, and then it's tossed in that the Natives were standing there to greet him and his shipmates.

My family's genealogical history is Native American.

Now, if my distant family opens the door when the bell rings ... Who discovered and built the house?

Moving right along with the rest of the text, the author describes the succession of each color y as they began to emerge; as with many other history books, this one also lists several review questions at the end of each chapter to ensure the reader retains as much information as possible

The Revolution, Civil War and a bit about slavery and Abe Lincoln are covered in the third chapter - then it's off to WW2 and the Great Depression. Many facts are given in the book, including dates and locations of events in North America's history, and for any student who is s researching for a history report would probably find some valuable information in this book.

Good book

Good book but way too short. Lack a lot of details especially about the Cold War.

The story is almost certainly apocryphal, but it was aptly used to demonstrate the Confederates' frustration with a man who everyone regarded as a capable general. Johnston began the Civil War as one of the South's senior commanders, leading the ironically named Army of the Potomac to victory in the Battle of First Bull Run over Irvin McDowell's Union Army. But Johnston would become known more for losing by not winning. Johnston was never badly beaten in battle, but he had a habit of strategically withdrawing until he had nowhere left to retreat.

General Joseph Johnson

The book does a very good job of explaining who Joe Johnson was and his strategy of preserving his army during the Georgia campaign leading up to the Battle of Atlanta. It explains his motivation and strategic moves to block the advance of a much larger and better equipped army under General Sherman. The book also explains his acions to bring the War to an end in a way that would have the least impact on the South. Unfortunately, the agreement that he and Sherman reached was not accepted in Washington due to outrage over the assassination of President Lincoln.

Joseph Johnston 101

This is an excellent introduction to the life and times of Confederate General Joseph Johnston, one of the most controversial Confederate military men. It captures the complex personality of the general, being ferociously brave as a person (his uniform accumulated 30 bullet holes in one battle of the Seminole War, he was hit five times in Mexico, and seriously wounded at Seven Days) but very cautious as a military commander.

It tells some of the poignant episodes of Johnston's life, such as his fistfight with Jefferson Davis while both were cadets at West Point (apparently this is why Davis detested him during the Civil War) and his death from pneumonia contracted as the pall bearer at William T. Sherman's funeral --- his mortal enemy from the Civil War who became one of his best friends after the war.

The book also wraps a lot of early 19th Century American History around Johnston, including his involvement in the Seminole War, the Nullification Crisis, the Mexican War, Bleeding Kansas, John Brown's Raid, and of course the Civil War. It's a great short introduction to the people who interacted with Johnston like Andrew Jackson, Robert E. Lee, U.S. Grant, General Sherman, and Jefferson Davis.

Because Johnston arguably saw more of the Civil War than anyone else, being in command at Manassas, Seven Days, Vicksburg, Atlanta, and the final campaign against Sherman in North Carolina, this is also an excellent introduction to the Civil War.

The entire book can be read in about 30 minutes to an hour, so it may be too basic for the serious Civil War buff. But it is extremely easy to read and therefore an ideal resource for students who may be doing a term paper on General Johnston or the Civil War as a whole. The maps and photos are superb.

Great subject, mixed execution

Interesting time period of a little known insurrection. However, not written for the Laymen, The writing style is methodically with little scope, broad analysis or page turning excitement. The book is simply a wall of facts focused on the singular endeavor of tying the 1956 vigilance committee to land deeds.

That is hardly a modern phenomenon. New Yorkers have always grieved over the city's continuous upheavals and ever-increasing size and complexity. By the 1820s, Wall Street had lost whatever charm it might have had; former residents complained that two-story houses had given way to intimidating five-story office buildings. The New York Commercial Advertiser noted in 1825 that "Greenwich is no longer a country village," but rather an up-and-coming neighborhood. Today, it's hard to find a history of New York City that doesnt refer to Henry James's famous 1908 story The Jolly Corner, in which a man returns to New York after decades abroad only to be horrified by an unfamiliar hellscape of commercial growth. He finds his once-jolly childhood home nearly buried "among the dreadful multiplied numberings which seemed to him to reduce the whole place to some vast ledger-page, overgrown, fantastic, of ruled and criss-crossed lines and figures." The once-beloved city has transformed itself into "the mere gross generalisation of wealth and force and success." That childhood homean 1830s townhousein fact belonged to the James family on Washington Square in Greenwich Village. It was destroyed to make way for New York University, which is today embroiled in yet another real estate saga as it plans to expand once again.

Of course, visitors flock by the millions to tour New York and see the sights that change and stay the same, from Central Park to the High Line to the city's most famous buildings and museums. But not everything in the Big Apple is as it appears, however. Some believe the city is a mysterious place haunted by spirits, and a place of strange disappearances and unexplained phenomena.

tells the story well but ignores too much yankee culture

Paul Moyer tells the prolonged and complex story of the Connecticut colonization of Pennsylvania and its attendant violence. The research is quite good and the narrative clear, if academic. Moyer brings many of the characters in this bloody series of incidents to life and this book will highlight one of the major wars within the American Revolution. Readers will be shocked at the amount of blood letting between Yankees and Pennsylvanians.

Moyer wants to strip the "wild Yankees" of their special character as New Englanders, arguing that their surge for independence was nearly identical to North Carolina regulators and other frontiersmen. But this point of view denudes the Yankees of their own culture including schools and powerful and engaging towns-- unusual features on the Pennsylvania frontier-- and the Yankees continuing ties to their Connecticut homelands.

Still, a first rate piece of work.

Mathew Axelson served with Marcus Luttrell on that fateful mission which is told in the book: Lone Survivor. Mathew Axelson's deeds in that mission were also heroic and he deserves praise for giving his life for the seal team and his country.
