Publisher's Summary:
The Heart of Annie tells the story of Lilly Roche and Curtis Walker, whose lives have flourished socially and professionally, but who find themselves single through a combination of circumstance, choice, and heartbreak. Lilly's mother passed away when she was a teenager, leaving her to an adolescence spent coping with her father's depression and her brother's ceaseless bullying. The divorce of Curtis' ill-matched parents at age 13, and later his own failed engagement, leaves him on emotional cruise control, surfing through dozens of patchwork relationships, unwilling to fully connect. But one fall when Curtis' uncle Bob Walker, dear to both Lilly and Curtis, suffers a heart attack, it brings Curtis from Los Angeles to Lilly's Austin. Their unexpected reconnection - after first meeting as children - shocks them both awake to the desire to pursue love, and more awakened lives for themselves. As Lilly and Curtis fall in love and navigate their new relationship, each character has to learn how to drop their defenses and re-examine their role in creating their own historically stagnant narrative. This insight allows Lilly to begin aggressively defining her boundaries with her family and pursue her own desires, while Curtis begins to shed his cynical abandonment of hope and to reimagine himself as a man worthy of a happy ending.
Members Reviews:
A great read!
Much more than a 'chick' book, The Heart of Annie is a story with which many people in this day and age can identify. The complexities of careers, jaded attitudes toward love and the importance of family all come together in a beautifully written novel that has the reader both cheering for love while scolding their best friend for their stupid relationship mistakes. I found it almost impossible to stop reading. The imagery and historical insights are the perfect topping for a wonderful book.
Lovely
Disclosure: This is actually a review from a woman - James' wife. My review: Have you ever had a friend that just couldn't find love? That is who Curtis and Lilly are. They repeatedly sabotage themselves until they find each other. And then you find yourself just pulling for them, but then blast it, they start doing idiot things again. Heart of Annie was a pleasant, easy read but afterwards, I felt like I had taken a trip through a very meaningful relationship. The story resonated with me for days and reminded me of people I love. Especially Austin! Love that town!
Absolutely Believable Love Story will have you Laughing Out Loud!
Just finished JS Foote's "The Heart of Annie", a well-paced love story, but grounded in so much more: the value of friendship, the impact of family, the fragility of trust & the gift of redemption. Foote is a talented writer who has meshed some of the fundamental issues of modern life into a compelling story I found hard to put down. The setting, principally in Austin, Texas is absolutely lyrical at times. But the big takeaway is Foote's superb ability to create believable characters and dialogue so true to life that one wonders if the author actually wrote the words or secretly recorded friends as they muddled through life's challenges. These are people you know, or surely want to know.....right down to the incidental supporting cast that pop onto center stage for unexpected moments like shimmering pearls. Each appearance moves the story and leaves you wanting to know more about them.
