Publisher's Summary:
For Roshi Pat Enkyo O'Hara, intimacy is what Zen practice is all about: the realization of the essential lack of distinction between self and other that inevitably leads to wisdom and compassionate action. She approaches the practice of intimacy beginning at its most basic level - the intimacy with ourselves that is the essential first step. She then shows how to bring intimacy into our relationships with others, starting with those dearest to us and moving on to those who don't seem dear at all. She then shows how to grow in intimacy so that we include everyone around us, all of society, the whole world and all the beings it contains. Each chapter is accompanied by practices she uses with her students at the Village Zendo for manifesting intimacy in our lives.

I'm happy to see a book by Enkyo...well done!
down to earth and honest
A lot of spiritual writing leaves the reader with the sense that transcendence is possible if he or she practices in just the correct way. Consequently, many practitioners go around thinking that there is some subtle nuance that they just aren't getting. I like this book a lot because it doesn't skate over the immensity of the challenges we face both as individuals and as a society.
Buddhism is a practical, reality based approach to those difficulties. The title alludes to the reality that we try to avoid our suffering when what we most need to do is to become intimate with it. I highly recommend this for novices as well as long time students. We are all, after all, beginners in each fresh moment.
