Set during and just after the First World War, The Lie is an enthralling, heart-wrenching novel of love, memory and devastating loss.

Behind him is also the most intense relationship of his life. Daniel has survived, but will he ever be able to escape the terrible, unforeseen consequences of a lie?

"Never striking a false note, The Lie is one of those rare and arresting novels that make you think and feel with greater lucidity." (Daily Telegraph)
"An electrifying and original talent" (Guardian)

Wonderful novel ruined by poor narration
I'm a great fan of Helen Dunmore, and was looking forward to listening to 'The Lie'. The story itself is gripping and show's Dunmore's usual great skill. However, Darren Benedict's narration was clumsy in the extreme, grating and, for me, ruined the novel. (Northern instead of West Country accent; poor inflection and inability to pronounce 'nasturtium' properly - just for a start!). I'd recommend reading the book instead of downloading the audiobook.
    Great book, terrible reader
What a shame this book was ruined by the narrator. Not only did he mispronounce many common words - "barrage" and "hearth" being just two examples of dozens - he also read sentences with completely wrong emphasis, indicating that he had no idea what the sentence was about. I stuck it out only because of the marvellous Dunmore writing.
    so sad
Would you consider the audio edition of The Lie to be better than the print version?
i can't answer because i haven't read the printed version
What other book might you compare The Lie to, and why?
not sure, the description of the landscape reminded me of some daphne dumauier books
What does Darren Benedict bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
the narration was wonderfully paced and he brought real emotion to the charcters
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
very sad but made you smile too
    Dull delivery.
This was my first Helen Dunmore book. She is a good writer, her description is excellent and I enjoyed the first hour of listening even though the narrator's delivery was rather dull.
It all went downhill from there for me. The plot was slow and did not interest me. It was all rather fantastic, like the storyteller was living in a dream world. Haunted by ghosts.
I do wonder if I would have enjoyed it a bit more if the narration hadn't been so boring.
It was an unhappy book leaving me feeling unsatisfied. But it was well written. I wonder if her other books have similar themes, or are worth a listen..... because she is a descriptive writer.
    Slow and tedious
This book tells of Daniel who returns from the trenches, physically unscathed but very emotionally damaged (PTS), and his attempts to settle back into civilian life in the place he grew up.

Hillyarde is to paint the man holding a lady's hand - a hand which descends from a cloud - complete with a puzzling motto: Attici Amoris Ergo.

    Not what I expected
What would have made The Truth of the Line better?
    A professional narrator
Has The Truth of the Line put you off other books in this genre?
Yes, by this author and narrator.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She sounds exactly as she is.... a non-professional actress/performer.
You didnt love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    Not in my opinion.
    Any additional comments?
The quality of the writing is very amateurish. Malanie Taylor, please don't waste your time writing another book. Spare the listening public.... please. :(

Enjoyed the stroy of a family from Ireland
The story itself is very good. I don't find many stories that I am willing to listen to knowing that there is a series. I am glad this was one that was enjoyable. There were times I thought the narrator was reading a storybook to an elementary classroom; especially in the beginning. Other times, the story itself seemed a bit elementary. In spite of that, I finished the story in 2 days, so it was pretty good. I plan to listen to the rest of the series. I received the audio book free for an honest review.
The book starts with a horrid trip across the ocean with many other people looking for a better life in America. The same sort of thing still happens when people are stuffed into trucks after they pay outrageous fees to be brought into the US from Mexico.
A wife arrives in Philadelphia with her toddler, leaving her husband to raise money for his trip later. She is expected to live with cousins that she has never met, work in a factory even though she has never worked a day in her life. She struggles with living in a strange culture and dealing with a cruel, abusive boss, and losing a pregnancy without the support of her husband.
The character development is through; I felt I was able to know each person and how they were supportive in the story. This would be a good book to listen to while on a long weekend getaway.
    Awesome Twists
I expected the typical historical fiction with romance and drama, but nothing like what I heard. The twists kept coming, and the narration kept me interested until the very end. There are some violent scenes, so if you are of faint of heart, this is not the book for you. However, even the violent scenes were performed impeccably.
The story takes place in 1820 when a young woman takes her son traveling to America. The conditions she faces at work, with family and in society are real and believable. The twists and turns this roller coaster takes you on is a wild ride.
    I love this novel.
    Any additional comments?
I love this novel. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves seeing the world and our history how it truly is/was and not as the Hollywood version we pretend it is/was.
Tower of Tears takes you on an emotional roller coaster as it explores the lives of an Irish family who has migrated to America. The novel focuses mainly on Jane, a timid, wonderful, loving woman who travels to America with her young son at the behest of her husband and to fulfill her mothers final wish that she go to America to find a better life. Janes husband and brother follow nearly two years later, but unfortunately, by then, life in the new world and life without his wife have irrevocably changed the once happy couple.
This the story holds nothing back.

The third and last book in the family saga. All were wonderful read in a class of their own. A audible must
    Absolutely brilliant
Although written quite a few years ago this is the last book in what has to be the best trilogy ever - a wonderful story, beautifully written and exceptionally read. I am sad to have finished it. More Delderfield please!
    Brilliant trilogy
Im not sure how my life will be now Im no longer part of the Craddock family. If you love an English setting, a family saga and a bit of history then this trilogy, A Horseman Riding By might just be for you. It will one of those stories that stay with me forever.

He is now a motorcycle racer competing in the Isle of Man TT, but he is finding it hard to adjust to life during peacetime. He too was shot down during the war and spent some time helping the Italian partisans on the ground so he knows a great deal about Nazi brutality, betrayal, corruption and the settling of scores that was the partisan's life in Italy at the time. He also fell in love with Francesca, one of the partisan leaders, and he is keen to find out what happened to her and renew their affair. However, what they uncover is more dangerous and complex than either Linda or Jack could ever have imagined.

Love these Robert Ryan wartime stories
Love these Robert Ryan wartime stories. If you like aircraft, autos, motorcycles and history, this is the author for you. Besides his intricate plots and exciting action, you really learn a lot from reading these books. In After Midnight we learn about the Italian resistance, mixed in with some history of Mussolini, Switzerland, Mosquito and Beechcraft airplanes, and all sorts of stuff. I can't really find other books that interest me as much as Ryan's novels. There are some unbelievable plot twists, such as the protagonist being cornered and just-in-time finding a 20 year old still-functional bazooka to blow away his adversaries. If only I had luck like that!
Still a great read. I really enjoyed this book.
An great idea but just never quite gelled for me
This book started off so well. It begins with a letter from a father to his daughter during the war, and then there is an amazing scene talking about a body which has been hidden in an isolated part of the Alps. Concealed for years and for some unexplained reason - the unfortunately the whole thing really fell apart for me.
The daughter is now grown up and wants to find out what happened to her father, he was a fighter pilot and disappeared during a mission over Italy. She wants to know what he did and where he is now although she has no illusions about whether he is still alive.
The story does follow twists and turns but I found the romance elements in it confusingly unnecessary, it was like they were there by rote and in the end I have to say that I just didn't really care that greatly what happened. Maybe the genre of a World War 2 novel cutting back and forth to the 1960s just wasnt interesting enough.
There is a nice acknowledgement in the back in which Ryan talks about his inspiration for this book and so on which actually made a better story to me than the book itself.
I don't think this book is generally reflective of Ryan's calibre as an author.
    Quite fascinating
During WWII, Mussolini sided with Hitler, thinking it would keep his country safe, but there were Italians who did not agree with him, and these partisans did what they could to fight the Germans and the Italian national guards, to keep Italy free from Hitler's grasp.

    Extremely good read
After watching the old John Wayne Movie I decided to read the novel. I was not disappointed. The descriptions of inner struggle for love and power were insightful and compelling. The flaws of human nature were revealed and the clash of the Titans was colorful and dramatic. It could have moved a little faster, but the slower pace, imagery and colorful characters are what make it a great read. The movie did not do this novel anything close to justice.
    exciting adventure
A story of the gold rush in Alaska and claim jumpers and the fight that incurs from it. It has great characters and plenty of action with one great fist fight at the end, it also has a mistaken love story through it that was very interesting, a great book that was made into several great movies so buy and enjoy you won't be disappointed.
Still Good Reading After More Than A Century
This is a gripping book that is full of adventure and suspense. Although it was written in 1906, the story is still compelling. It's still such a good story that the book has been made into a movie at least 6 times starting in 1914. I enjoy Rex Beach because although he was known as the "Victor Hugo of the North", he still spent a lot of time in my state, Florida, and his grave is located at Rollins College in Winter Park. Read more about him at[...]
    The Spoilers
The story is great but I just have a hard time reading stories that are written in the "Vernacular" of the time such as Zane Grey did as well. I spend to much time working to pronounce the words.
    I may be alone.
Reading a book more than a century old by a forgotten author makes me believe I'm the only one reading the Spoilers today or on any given night. That's a shame. This is a magnificent book. It is fast paced, beautifully crafted, and just plain entertaining. I know Beach had a tragic life but he left us a good read. Maybe it's my love of the North that drew me to it but it's the story that kept me with it. One paragraph on the description of the small locomotive engine in the chapter on Dynamite is brilliant. Why don't authors write like this today?

BTB at her superb best. A sweeping saga set around the aristocratic Ingham family of Cavendon Hall and the Swanns who serve them, set on the eve of World War I.
Two entwined families: the aristocratic Inghams and the Swanns who serve them. One stately home: Cavendon Hall, a grand imposing house nestled in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. A society beauty: Lady Daphne Ingham is the most beautiful of the Earl's daugthers. Being presented at Court and then a glittering marriage is her destiny. But in the summer of 1913, a devastating event changes her future forever, and puts the House of Ingham at risk.
Life as the families of Cavendon Hall know it - Royal Ascot, supper dances, grouse season feasts - is about to alter beyond recognition as the storm clouds of war gather.
    Critic Reviews:

"Romantic and thrilling." (Independent on Sunday)
    Members Reviews:
Not far in but narrator not suited to this book.
If you could sum up Cavendon Hall in three words, what would they be?
    Yorkshire, comforting, familiar.
Would you be willing to try another one of Anna Bentincks performances?
Not if there is a Yorkshire accent involved
    Any additional comments?
Why on earth was this narrator selected to read a book which involves Yorkshire accents? The voice she uses for the young gypsy girl Genevra makes her sound more like a 60 year old man. I am Yorkshire born and bred and her supposed local accents are dire. Am trying my best to enjoy this audio book but rather wish I had bought the book itself and I am seriously considering returning the audio book, solely due to the narration.
    Lost in another time....
I loved this book. The characters were perfectly balanced...most memorable for me was The Great War. chapters...anticipating who was going to return and who may not. i thought the narrator was spectacular. I must read the sequel asap....Just hooked on period dramas with a bit of history thrown in....So enjoyable. cannot go far wrong with BTB....
    dire!
What would have made Cavendon Hall better?
This is one of the most boring stories ever. The plot is utter tosh and to compare it with Downton Abbey is a nonsense.
Has Cavendon Hall put you off other books in this genre?
    Yes.
Which character as performed by Anna Bentinck was your favourite?
    All were well executed.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Cavendon Hall?
    All of them.
    costume drarma storytelling
Loved this book, a real nice surprise, a family story set before & after W1 and after. longer than expected but stick with it.

    An Enjoyable Reading Endeavor
William Clark's first novel, 'An Honorable Endeavor', is full of reading pleasures: Techno-thriller detail, likable and complicated characters, heroics writ large and small, and vivid landscapes and cityscapes. Above all, it's laced with a deep pathos about war in general, and for those who fight wars -- both friendlies and enemies -- in particular. With America's ongoing foreign wars, and the men and women still returning from overseas emotionally and physically shattered, Mr. Clark's empathy for the warrior class is what resonated with me most in his novel.
Before I go on, I have to say that this self-published book, like so many before it, needs a professional editor's attention. Here's the main reason I say so: If the author's current and future work generates a groundswell of grassroots interest, much like Hugh Howey's 'Wool' series did, his books will need to read more smoothly. There are so many poignant themes and so much beautiful use of language in this novel; it deserves to be read widely. It's too good of a debut novel for the mental speedbumps that come along with reading it.
On the other hand, it's the rapid-transition-to-market provided by internet self-publishing that allows authors like Hugh Howey and William Clark to get their work out there for readers who can appreciate it.
Long story short: I'm in for the next William Clark novel.
    Excelent Book!
Great read! Hard to put down. Very much like you were there â even if you were not! You can smell the jungle â the visualization is there. The main characters are not immune and are not the invincible ones, as in other books. Weaving several different storylines and characters together at the right time and place to create a book that is as true to life as it gets. Having served in the Marines and in VietNam, it brings back memories of the time and place and some of the political posturing both then and now. Definitely a five star book â Even Tom Clancy would love this one!
    If we really only knew
Quite the premise of this book. Will we ever really know how many got left behind? This story moved right along, kept this reader engaged in the action. Would recommend this anyone who was there and to anyone who wondered what is was in the Nam.
    Four Stars
    Very well written.
captures a lot of the feelings we Vietnam Nam vets have to live with.
Could use an editor for the typos, most of which seem to occur in the last 20% of the book. Still it was a good story line with interesting character development. I would buy his next novel.
