When Virgin publishing purchased WH Allen, the hardcover books were losing money.  In June, 1988 it was decided to stop publishing cloth bound Dr. Who books. The final novel, “The Smugglers,” was limited to 1000 copies.  That makes it extremely hard to find. The other titles were random.  153 hardcovers were published from 1974-1988 including reprints. Owning a whole set is a lofty goal. I am missing 4 titles as of now.  Loch Ness Monster 1st edition, The Three Doctors 2nd edition, Dinosaur Invasion 2nd edition, and The Time Warrior.  I doubt I will find them.  Joining me is Tony Whitt, host and producer of The Target Book Club Podcast.  Keep Collecting!

After finding a 1981 Catalog from the “Time Lord, Inc” of Brooklyn, NY owned by Ed Novak, I now have a new list of classic hardcover (Wingate and WH Allen) books sold in the USA in 1981.  This is 4 years before my company, Bundles from Britain, got the exclusive distribution deal from Lyle Stuart. This opens the door to more possible non-library copies that might be in the New York area and beyond!  This is breaking news!  The hardcover guide will be updated soon but here are the books that were sold in 1981 that were not in the Bundles catalog:

Web of Fear (possible 2nd printing)

Pyramids of Mars

Time Warrior

Tomb of the Cybermen

Dinosaur Invasion (possible 2nd printing)

Underworld

The Android Invasion

The Face of Evil

The Invisible Enemy

Planet of the Spiders (2nd print – before we had them!)

The Sontaran Experiment

The Seeds of Doom (possible 2nd print)

The Dalek Invasion of Earth (probably 2nd print)

The Masque of Mandragora

The Carnival of Monsters (possible 2nd print)

The Image of the Fendahl

The Loch Ness Monster (possible 3rd printing)

The Tenth Planet (possible 2nd print)

The Deadly Assassin

The Robots of Death

The Space War (possible 2nd print)

The Three Doctors (possible 2nd print)

The Ice Warriors (possible 2nd print)

So I will keep an eye out for these titles on Ebay and other sites!  Good Luck!

We continue our coverage of the Classic Dr. Who hardcovers by WH Allen with the year 1987. The company is being sold to Virgin books and sales are not going well. WH Allen is trying hard to liquidate assets and sell as many books in this final full year of publication. The books released are in a random order with only one Sylvester McCoy story making it to hardcover.  Tony Whitt, the host of the Target Book Club podcast, talks about the prose and story of each title citing reviews from his show.  With My Time and the Most Outrageous Offer, this will be a fun ride!
