  • "Gongfu Tea Journalism" w/ Joel Wolfram

    ON THIS EPISODE:

Joel Wolfram is a reporter whose work has appeared in the New York Times, the Philadelphia Inquirer, WHYY, and beyond. Outside of his journalism career, he has cultivated a reputation around his enthusiasm for gongfu tea brewing. I went into this episode with the theory that those aspects of his life worked in a kind of complimentary tension, that the stress of his reporting meant he liked to wind down with a focused, meditative appreciation for tea making. Joel suggested, maybe that's not the relationship at all. Perhaps it works in a different direction.

  • "Say 'Yes' to Everything" w/ Chris Urie

    ON THIS EPISODE:

In my conversation with writer, photographer, video maker, and project manager, Chris Urie, we unearth the relationships between each of his many roles. Chris is a jack of all trades with an aptitude for curiosity, and he likens his ability to “say ‘yes’ to everything’ to his rock-climbing ethos: stretch toward footholds just out of reach with the confidence of a strong support system to catch you if you fall.

  • "Workplace Comedy" w/ Lou Huang

    ON THIS EPISODE:

“A lot of people respond to issues in the world with anger, which is fine, you can harness that in a lot of useful ways. But I think that approach doesn’t work for me.” Lou Huang’s career exists between software development and urban planning, both fields about designing for human behavior.

For as serious as his work is, he can’t help but notice how funny it is that some things work the way they do. That’s why he recently started channelling his observations of everyday absurdities into sketch comedy, an outlet to talk about some of the mundane-but-ridiculous things professional people deal with on a daily basis.

    ON THIS EPISODE:

Almost everyone has a piece of media that helped inform who they are today. Books, movies, tv shows, poems, paintings — all of these have the power to leave an indelible mark on a person. For Kevin Seidman, that formative work is a Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) released on the Playstation in 1997. • “Roll for Empathy!” w/ Dain Saint & Daniel Park

    ON THIS EPISODE:

How do adults learn to practice using empathy? Dain Saint and Daniel Park think tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons are key to creating circumstances for people to learn how to participate in a community and negotiate feelings in a safe, fun, low-stakes environment. Daniel created a TTRPG called Space Opera, and Dain operates as a facilitator or “game master” of the experience.

  • “Super Metroid Forever” w/ Chris Cauley

    ON THIS EPISODE:

Media preservation comes in a lot of forms: new presses of vinyl records, 4K updates to classic movies, and randomizing 90s era video games! For Chris Cauley, the best way to relive nostalgia is to disassemble the components of a classic game, rearrange them up, and relive them for the first time.

Chris and I talk about the community that’s formed around remaking, demaking, remixing, and randomizing Super Metroid, a 30 year old game on Super Nintendo.

About Most Universal

From the publisher's feed

"What is most personal is most universal." American psychologist Carl Rogers believed that our most specific and niche interests were the same ones that resonated with other people. With almost two decades of Indy Hall existing, we know that it's true.
