Obesity rates are at an all-time high, heart disease is still the leading cause of adult death in the developed world and type 2 diabetes is now being diagnosed in children - something once thought to be a purely adult condition.
Most intervention efforts focus on minimising risk factors such as saturated fat and salt intake and stopping smoking. The US National institute of Health recently declared that coronary heart disease is more closely related to low birthweight than to known behavioural risk factors.
Should we focus on the pregnant belly to avoid the beer belly?
