The second half takes off like a jet
I was drawn to this book by the cover, not by "Mother." The first half of the story builds and builds at a steady pace but when you move forwards from there, as a reader, you understand why there was a deliciously tempting plot, which plummets you into a pit of twists and turns. The second half takes off like a jet.
The characters are interesting, but are they as they appear? The main characters: Franny and Mother, have been pretty fleshed out by other reviewers, so instead of talking about what happens, I'll just say that you should hold on for a pretty great ride with these two protagonists.
All in all an entertaining and surprising plot.
Very enjoyable read and well worth five stars.
Fast read
This book was a fast read, it puts me in the mind of Psycho which I think is amazing! I definitely recommend this book.
Mystery with a twist
Excellent mystery with an undertone of weirdness.. Very well written, impossible to put down. I'll be looking at the author's other books.
Mother Is Full Of Twists, Turns And Surprises
Colin Griffiths, author of such excellent books as: "Doll's House", "Never Say Goodbye" and "Underwood", tops himself with "Mother", his newest novel. "Mother" was edited by Grant Leishman, author of "The Photograph".
Griffiths is an excellent story teller, and he proves that in "Mother". It is well written, with a plot that moves along at a nice, steady pace. You will not get bored reading this story. "Mother" is full of amazing twists, turns and surprises. Just when I was so sure I had everything figured out, I was proved wrong. The ending was a complete and shocking surprise. The second half of the book is where things really begin to happen. I had a hard time putting this down. I read it in one day.
The main character is Francis Anne Tilsey. Her friends and family call her Franny. She works for the Benefits Agency, in the UK, similar to the Social Security Benefits Office in the USA. Franny also volunteers at a soup kitchen for the homeless. Franny has led a sheltered life, having to take care of mother since she was ten years old. Her mother is, in one word, a bitch. Franny meets David Hunter at the soup kitchen. He is the nephew of Helen, her friend from this soup kitchen. They begin to have a relationship, Franny's first ever with a man. Mother does approve, thinking that men are is vile. She calls her daughter a "dirty dog". Franny's relationship with her mother is a tortured one.
In the mix, are three murders. One, is of Harry Burns, a homeless man. Two women are also murdered in horrific ways. Semi-retired detective Kirk Walker takes a deep interest in these cases and has suspicions as to who the murderer is. He depends on his underling, Suzanne Edwards, for information.
