I am here in Paris, on a journey of exploration… a new birth this month for my 43rd solar return, and the 18th anniversary of my father’s death. In today's Mother of the Sword, we speak of listening while speaking, moving while sharing—this is the embodiment of the feminine mystery. Not linear, but spiral. Not fixed, but flowing. It’s how the Oracle spoke. It’s how dancers pray. It’s how healers channel.

This Mother of the Sword podcast explores about what to do with the birth that’s wanting to come through us, even in the midst of unknowing, rebirth, conflict and yes even, death. About how much our relationships suffer when we choose not to unhook ourselves from the systems that keep us bound and learn the relational skills necessary for liberation.

You bleed, you descend, you listen, you rise. The sacred marriage is in that movement. The Magdalene path honors both the descent and the resurrection.

What does it mean to listen while speaking?To be moved while sharing? To die to the ego, in service to all the soul still has left to share? We will love again—not the way we did before, not blindly, not out of need or habit—but with eyes open. With hearts that remember how much was lost when we turned away from ourselves, from each other.

Even if it kills us… maybe that’s the point.A kind of ego death. A breaking open.The Magdalene path. Love as initiation.

In light of new beginnings for Aries season and the Persian New Year (I have %7 Persian blood apparently), I am going to create today from and for all that came before. This is the best way to honor something new without being delulu–to honor the past. When we move from water to fire we get volcanic Earth. Something I am for sure an expert in.

I grew up breathing in the weight of unspoken things, addiction, abuse, love, lies, learning—before I even had the language for it—that truth, when silenced, festers. Fear a foul ghost.

That true words locked away in a drawer can carry more force than false words spoken aloud. I learned that pain, when left unnamed, can consume a person from the inside out. I witnessed it in my mother’s longing, in my father’s addiction, in the letters that never found their way to the hands that needed to hold them.

And so, of course, I became obsessed with raw truth.

Because I know what it feels like to read something and feel it crack me open. I know the power of words that have been held back for too long, the electricity they carry when finally released. I understand, in the marrow of my being, that the difference between a life lived freely and a life suffocated by silence often comes down to whether or not we dare to speak.

This is why I help others put their raw truth on the page, into the song, into spiritual practice. Because I know what it means to have something insid that is too big to hold alone. I know that truth doesn’t just live in the mind—it lives in the body, in the breath, in the shaking hands that dare to write the thing that was never meant to be spoken. I know that art is not just expression; it is liberation.

In today’s episode of Mother of the Sword, I speak with one of my dearest friends—also a Leo (in Western astrology), a psychologist and spiritual counselor, and a lifelong yogini, Dr. Varsha Choudhari. We dive deep into how India was once a matriarchal society—and still is in some places—where the rivers themselves are worshipped as goddesses, and how the awakening of Kundalini holds a sacred, embodied purpose in our lives as women.

Let’s face it, things are ending. Ouch. And thank Goddess. The more we merge with the truth of our lives, the more we are asked to let go- inside and out.

Since the election in the US, many people are still frozen, unable to feel the immensity of what is happening. If you have been paying attention to Palestine these past years, then you aren’t unfamiliar with this experience. There hasn’t been a day since October 7th 2023 that I haven’t felt immense grief and rage with and for the people of Palestine. I believe Palestinians, should be free and protected to exist and on their land. Period.

Although I’ve been deeply spiritual and considered myself a mystic since I started dropping acid in high school and reading Alan Watts, I often found myself forced to practice the skill of finding the “baby in the bathwater,” as they say. This means sorting through the messy, uncomfortable, layers of false beliefs and patriarchal conditioning to find the truth—the essence—that remains. And, no doubt, it’s a skill that has proven helpful and necessary.

But what if I don’t want to work that hard? What if I don’t want to sift through layers of someone else’s unprocessed trauma and bullshit just to uncover something pure? Haven’t I been doing that since I was born - for my parents and society?

All the ancient traditions point to something inside us, something they say is the truth of our being, and they all remind us that these teachings are just "fingers pointing to the moon." But why, then, do I find myself constantly having to navigate around authorities I would never allow into my own home? If the moon—the Divine, the truth—is already within my own body, why do I not always perceive it? What has happened to us as humans? (A deep, grieving sigh.)

All my mystical, aka direct, experiences of the Divine were raw, unfiltered—pure. There was no dogma, no intermediary, no rules to follow, and not even a rejection of those rules. She was, and is, here, coursing through me, in the marrow of my bones, the pulse of my heartbeat.

And sometimes, depending on how thick the patriarchal lens is clouding my view, I can assure you, there is no baby in that bathwater. Not for me, anyway. I poured the bowl over my hear and blessed my tired body and aching heart instead.

What I felt was not something to be separated, filtered, or cleaned up. It was already whole, already sacred, already alive within me, as it always has been. Shattered by this world, yet cradled by those that dwell beyond it.

A pull I’ve felt over the past five years is toward the ancient rituals and forms of worship that predate Christianity, that existed before all religion—those that ground us in the Earth, in the body, in the sacred.

Have you ever made a fire from a bow drill? Felt that first spark of light ignite, rising from nothing but friction, Earth, a delicate dance of effort and surrender, with air feeding it all? I have. It was one of the holiest things I’ve ever experienced. What about that first spark of fire? The moment when something raw, ancient, and alive is born from the simplest elements?

My satisfaction for this desire to know the primal deepened when I encountered the tradition of the Tarantella, shared by my teacher Alessandra Belloni. This isn’t just about exorcising the "demons" from women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and queer folks; it’s a primal, embodied ritual of dance and drum that calls us back to the raw eros—the aliveness—so often suppressed in societies that fail to protect the sacred pulse of life.

Even in India, a few years ago, in a Lakshmi temple in Mumbai, it was late, and they invited us to stay for the temple’s closing. The doors closed behind us, and we sat together, lotus in hand, eyes closed, breathing deeply, feeling the living sacred feminine power stir within us. The energy in the space was palpable—alive, electric. And then, we heard the call. When we returned to the altar for one last look at the goddesses—who usually shine with golden faced masks—what I saw instead were three stones, interconnected, painted with red kumkum. And I felt it again, that pull, to the primal, to the earth beneath my feet, to the stones, to the power of the sacred feminine that moves through us all.

What happened to worshipping the Earth as the Goddess, the Sun as the lifeblood of existence, the Sky as holy ground where our spirits can rise and rest in sacred embrace?

Surrender is necessary and also what triggers us the most. So how about we just, actually, stop trying to surrender. Pisces is also, the void, the Sacred Unknown. So what if you don't even know that you "need to surrender?" What then?

What happens next? What do you notice? What is its more of a natural process than religion and its abusive tendencies taught to believe. What if it's yes painful, but also way more fun to be alive than numb and in service to systems we don't believe in?

Don’t let the way the oppressor lives in your body—those signals of stress, anxiety, despair, and hopelessness—win. Yes, you must feel it to heal it, but you also must rise up and prove that bitch wrong by choosing something else. Do NOT consent to the systems of domination and control that you never had a say in. Do NOT consent to the lie that death is the end, or allow any pattern of control to keep you from being your truest self.

If you’ve been in that place of deep wound before, let yourself climb out of that hole faster than you did last time. That is progress, and only you can claim the truth of it within. No words, no teachings, no external wisdom can do that inner alchemy for you. The fear is offering you pieces of yourself to love—that’s its gift. Boundaries = Love. Don’t forget this.

Do not surrender to the systems inside that seek to manipulate and silence your soul. Awakening is not about grasping or forcing the way; it’s about unraveling and unlearning the behaviors that harm us, that stand in the way of love. It may feel like the death of parts of you that have only ever known a certain pattern or story. But so what? Did you not come here to learn how to dance with the dead?

You’ve felt it before, perhaps in a heartbreak, or in the death of a parent, or in the sudden, unexpected loss. These weren’t just tragic events—they were invitations. But that choice, that courage, is yours alone to make.

With the dark goddess who pulls us into her endless embrace—who exiles nothing, who holds everything—you can’t fake it. You must dive deeper, until you meet Her Love face to face. There is no blind faith here, only the love of a community that carries us from shame into the next layers of soul we were born to create.

As Venus revels in Pisces for a few more days, we tap into our power of sacred sexuality. Our abandonment wound is soothed by us reclaiming the oracular arts in relationship to our love, to our body and beyond. To honor our inner knowing that love and sex, is deeply, and wildly spiritual.

Our hearts break open when we learn to stop ignoring the paradoxes. We are never, and always, alone. We will die alone and surrounded by all those who walked before. We will love in ways that hurts but we came to learn what and who we came to be. We are already free, we just forgot.

We see Capricorn energy as an expression of earthly, sacred sexuality—a devotion to our deepest desires. It is the wild woman dancing with Saturn, Father Time, embodying the structure that allows creation to flourish. (I can already feel the swoon of meeting Saturn in the temples of India…)

The contraction necessary for the seeds of our heart’s desires to germinate within protection and peace—however uncomfortable or resistant we may be to it—is an essential and natural part of the process.

In Tantra, we do not suppress desire; we surrender it to the Divine. We honor the unseen, fertile potential before it manifests into something tangible, something we might seek to extract from.

We practice standing together in the vulnerable terrain of our weak-kneed triggers, and we rest in the fertile soil of our shimmering truths. It is messy. It is meant to be.

Do you know what drains us most in our sacred creative and relational work in the world? The refusal to consciously offer it to the infinite Source of Love Herself. This withholding exhausts us more than the labor itself, for creation without surrender becomes separation—a forgetting of the divine thread that runs through all we touch.

All the way back to the witch burnings in Europe (watch this doc Burning Times,) and even beyond before most magic and community care became colonized, the gays and the girls, the non gender conforming and trans* folks were always up to “no good,” in the eyes of the oppressors. We have been creating spells and magic, Earth, birth and death tending, community care and real life changing love together beyond the control and domination of this world for a long time.

We can call on our ancestors and one another to remember true belonging and liberation. To gather the love and protection we need as human beings. We have been meeting every Friday at 10a PST online in Body Temple Dance for the past four years, and it is revolutionary to feel what’s underneath through your body I can assure you.

On the retreat where I met Greg, I got to taste that life changing true eros flowing through me in dance, having practiced the ancient movements of my ancestors enough times to fully surrender into the more subtle energy of the practice. After the spinning grief trance dance, I let go and sank down onto the Earth, remembering Greg casting seriously potent prayers in Latin over the group moved me to tears.

These gender-variant, same-sex loving people often worked alongside women priestesses and spiritual healers, many times acting as hierodules, spiritual functionaries who used sex as a way to effect powerful transformation.

Despair and surges of feeling “not okay” are prevalent, yet solace can be found in fleeting moments. I carry a story and a flickering, unyielding fire in my heart for our rage and grief. I need not possess answers to serve; this is one of the gifts recovery has bestowed upon me. May you embrace this gift as your own, should you need it too.

I was the first girl born into a family of New Jersey Italians. My Scorpio father wept. While I was in the womb, he attempted various methods—bouncing my mother’s belly, driving over train tracks—to “shake off the balls” if I were a boy. He already had a son at a young age, and it was a challenging dynamic.

My entire boisterous Italian family gathered at Clara Maass Hospital in Belleville, New Jersey, anticipating my arrival. After over 48 hours of labor, they used forceps to extract me. My dark brown, hairy head emerged, marked with bruises as I screamed into existence.

Forty years later, I still find myself screaming against injustice, feeling unheard and unseen. In confronting addiction, navigating crises, or engaging with a dissonant government, my rage transforms into a gift. It sustains my humanity, allowing me to be present for others in their depths.

Yet, if I’m not vigilant, this rage can obscure the deeper, guttural pain that catalyzes change. Expressing truth to power is one thing; failing to process that truth burdens me with unresolved trauma.

My father turned to drugs to escape his childhood pain, while I channel my rage toward my body’s inherent capacity to heal.

From ages seven to twenty-seven, I internalized everything. Once it was clear my needs wouldn’t be met, I conformed to societal expectations.

My father died when I was twenty-four, and we buried him on my twenty-fifth birthday. As a Scorpio and Taurus, we shared a tumultuous journey of underworld initiations and healing through enduring pain.

At his funeral, I felt numb. At his deathbed, I dissociated—a protective response when reality becomes overwhelming. A mantra emerged as I stood with family: Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu. I didn’t fully grasp its meaning, yet it resonated deeply.

This mantra became my lifeline. We all need something to cling to when the soul feels separate from the body, or when we recognize our existence but not its fullness. We require a vessel to navigate from the illusion of separation to the shores of our heart’s truth.

For years, my father haunted me. We are all shaped by our pasts, particularly in our relationships, which unearth the patterns we strive to transcend. This journey can be daunting without the support of those who honor the Earth and her children, invoking mythopoetic action. Navigating the subconscious without a lifeline can be perilous—without someone to guide the way as we attentively receive what arises.
