  • Mini Episode: Do Mothers Feel Safe to Express their Mental Load?

Do mothers feel safe to express their mental load?

The reason I ask is that I’d venture that most of us DON’T feel safe expressing our mental loads to the people closest to us.

When I say “feel safe,” what I mean is that mothers feel like they can be HONEST with their partners, family members or on social media without being gaslighted, questioned, disagreed with, or made to feel stupid for speaking their truth.

Many of us are afraid to say this is hard due to getting pushback or comments like well, you chose this. You chose to have kids. You chose this partner. But just because we chose something, doesn’t mean it’s not hard.

So that’s today’s episode – do you feel safe expressing your truth? If not, why? What is at the root of your hesitation?

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    • How expressing our truths is NOT an invalidation of someone else’s truth – it’s about being SEEN in the context of the village
    • That fear for speaking our truths could also be a cultural phenomenon; we’re afraid of being different or expressing our need for more support
    • The shared experience that results when we create more opportunities for mothers to express truths without feeling judged/shamed/wrong/ungrateful
    • Questions to ask yourself if you DON’T feel safe expressing your motherload: what would make you feel safe? What are you scared of?
    • How it went when I told my partner I wanted him to turn his phone off when he came home to be more present for the kids (hint: it went well)
    • The value in looking at these questions regularly, which can illuminate areas of our inner worlds we might not be aware of

  • Emily Potter: Nurturing Our Own Health as Ambitious Mothers

Do you regularly “get quiet” to figure out your next step?

I’m always surprised how many people don’t do this and instead go outward, getting advice from others and trying to solve all their problems externally. In my opinion, there are some things you’re only going to solve by going within.

In those moments of panic or defeat, it takes resilience to go within and trust that this setback doesn’t have to mean anything about us. This is a circumstance we’re in, but there IS a way forward. This is one of the big subjects in today’s episode with Emily Potter, a functional diagnostic nutrition practitioner, entrepreneur, and mother of two.

Listen in as we discuss this and other major topics regarding the motherload, including taking care of ourselves, pivoting in hard times, and modeling the behavior we want to see in our kids.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    • How Emily started her business and had her first baby in 2013, and how she pivoted when her family moved from Southern California to Idaho to Montana
    • Techniques to find another way when something fails, including looking inward, brain dumping (my personal favorite), and using the “wide angle lens”
    • The importance of using intuition in motherhood, and the things that can pull us out of it, from noise to external opinions
    • How Emily uses time blocking to manage parenting and all her businesses, being very specific on what she’s doing when
    • Modeling the behavior we want to see in our kids, from taking the time to eat breakfast to creating the life and career we desire
    • How little decisions make a huge difference in our well-being, and how to increase your motherload capacity (i.e., become stronger or lighten your load)

    Resources & Links

Be sure to check out Emily’s businesses and projects including NourishMint Wellness (both its Instagram and website) and her awesome project with Dr. Aluson Bonville called the Ignite Life Project (its Instagram and website), a three-month program for women struggling with burnout.

  • Mini Episode: Why I Want to Make $100K in 100 Days

My goal this spring is to make 100K in 100 days.

To be honest, I feel vulnerable talking about it. I’ve run successful businesses in which a thousand dollars a day was doable, but my life was different then. To do it with something I only recently started monetizing without a team feels intimidating.

Money is a big deal to the motherload. The proof? The responses I received on my social media poll regarding the role money plays in the weight mothers carry. One hundred percent of people said it was a huge factor.

I encourage you to join our challenge, regardless of whether or not you’re a mother or entrepreneur. My guess is that at least 95 percent of us have some negativity in our relationships with money. My goal? To become more intimate and find peace in my OWN relationship with it – and to encourage others to do the same.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    • The backstory of this challenge – my friend Lindsay Mango wanted to make 100K in 30 days, which I found so inspiring (she hit this goal, and then some)
    • The self-doubt I’m feeling about this challenge, my block this fall, and how this challenge forces me to address my OWN money mindset issues
    • Inner work regarding money – why do I still have issues with it at age 40? Where does the discomfort come from?
    • Questions for the listener: who do you talk to about money? Peers? Your partner? Your business or coworkers?
    • The logistics of the challenge: it starts today, March 23, and spans through June 30; also, anyone can join with their own personal goals!
    • How I’ll show up for this challenge: every day I will be honest about what I’m feeling, where I’m at, the results I’m getting, and more

  • Melissa Henault: Schedules + Systems that Help Manage the Mental Load

Do you ever have a hard time only MEETING expectations instead of exceeding them?

I’m guilty of it, and I’m sure many listeners are, too. It’s a classic overachiever trait that hits on an important topic in today’s conversation with Melissa Henault: how are you spending your time? Would this energy EXCEEDING expectations at work be better directed somewhere else?

Melissa is a LinkedIn expert, host of the podcast Burnout to All Out, and mom of 3. In this episode, we discuss how overachievement played out in her corporate career and led to burnout – which, in turn, led her to starting her own thing.

Melissa talks about running her seven-figure business while remaining a present and devoted mom, and about mindfully spending money, which allows her to stay in her zone of genius and grow a team that helps her company thrive.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    • How Melissa “burned the midnight oil” getting her business off the ground for this future vision of her life with more time for herself and her family
    • Using LinkedIn to scale her first business online around her 9-to-5 and exceeding her corporate income within a year and a half
    • Learning to MEET expectations instead of exceed expectations – and how taking this step back can free you to spend this energy on something else
    • The importance of not attaching success to love when it comes to our kids, and pointing their interests in positive, healthy directions
    • Time management, the impact of hiring people with specific expertise, and compensating your employees strategically
    • Melissa’s pitch for LinkedIn: its high SEO ranking; its highest revenue ever this year; content is more likely to be seen here than Instagram or Facebook

  • Mini Episode: Resentment, Regret, and the Motherload

There are two words known as the “death codes.” I know this sounds dramatic and a little woo-woo. But hear me out.

    The words? Resentment. Regret.

I learned about the potency of these words during a plant medicine ceremony I did in September. The shaman told us these two words are the ones that will kill us the fastest, our energetic imprints on humanity erased most quickly by living in energies of resentment and regret.

I want to talk about these words in a practical sense because I see their presence a great deal in my clients’ motherloads and in my own. I encourage you to do some intentional inquiry about them, maybe while journaling, walking, thinking, meditating – wherever this inquiry has space to come through for you.

So: RESENTMENT. REGRET. How do these words show up in your life? How do they affect how you go out and live in the world?

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    • Resentment: bitterness and insidious anger made more potent by adding an an assignment of blame
    • Building an awareness: where does resentment live in your body? Is it directed at a person? An entity? Life in general? What is it limiting?
    • Asking further: how powerful is this resentment? Why are you holding onto it? And what is it feeding off?
    • Regret: a sadness about how something happened; about a decision we did or didn’t make; about a version of us that did or didn’t happen due to something
    • How so much of our identities can be hampered/handicapped by harboring resentment/regret, and how past traumas can feel different in motherhood
    • The core emotions underneath these words – anger and sadness – and how the more time spent here, the more the world reflects that back to us

  • Jaymie Gerena: Overcoming Childhood Trauma as a Mother

Childhood trauma can really impact how we show up as mothers.

Even if you’ve done a lot of work on it, the memory and wound is there. Part of the motherload includes combating these unconscious behaviors, patterns, and beliefs that play out in our lives — some of which we’re aware of, some not.

Today I’m with my friend Jaymie Gerena, a transformational strategist, master NLP practitioner, and mother of three children. She’s a survivor of child abuse and sexual and physical abuse and has been featured in many publications for her work helping women heal trauma and grow soul-aligned businesses.

In this episode, Jaymie and I discuss finding identity after abuse – for her it involved consciously approaching life and motherhood with a sense of building safety instead of hypervigilance – and approaching controversial topics within our families.

This conversation is so important because when we’re rooted in our identities as mothers, it’s easier to hold space for uncomfortable conversations and be confident in our beliefs – which consequently makes us better versions of ourselves, too.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    • Jaymie’s background: her traumatic childhood; losing her father and brother due to drugs and gang violence, respectively; and becoming a mom at age 20
    • How Tony Robbins and personal development changed her life – and how that ultimately affected how she parented, too
    • Jaymie’s advice: make a list of where you want to be and where you are now; then, figure out how to fill the gaps to get to that version of your future self
    • Being the victor instead of the victim and CHOOSING what to take forward, what to leave behind; what matters is how we move forward
    • Taking audits of our days and relying on intuition in our choices as parents vs. researching different points of view against what we innately feel
    • Practicing being uncomfortable and holding safe places to have hard conversations with other mothers, whether they agree with you or not

  • Mini Episode: Why You Need to Build Transitions Into Your Day

I feel distracted. Everything feels rushed. There’s never enough time to get everything done.

I hear this from moms all the time. And of course, these points are valid. But are there ways we can better manage our time so it’s more structured? So we’re not moving between every section of our day feeling like the thing we transitioned out of didn’t get done well?

In today’s episode, I want to focus on two ideas: transitions and context switching. I get that some distractions are unavoidable, but I believe there are things we can do to make this better. Losing time to context switching or rushing between transitions only makes the motherload feel even heavier.

Want to go deeper into these conversations? Join the MotherLoad Collective or DM me if you have any questions or want to share anything from today’s episode!

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    • Transitions – the ritual or practice you implement that moves you from one section of the day to the next (for example, “Mom mode” to “work mode”)
    • Rituals that work for me in my transitions, including closing the door to my office, turning on non-lyric music, and drinking coffee
    • Context switching – our brains “switching between tabs,” which is extremely ineffective and lowers our ability to produce high-quality thoughts
    • Bad digital hygiene, and how to reduce the amount of context switching in our day – namely, removing notifications on phones and laptops
    • How building more detail in your to-do list can cut down on recovery time when context switching happens
    • Completing a few tasks till the end vs. only getting halfway done a number of things, and why the latter creates more stress

  • Jenna Klopfenstein: Building Risk Tolerance + Making Bold Moves as a High-Achiever

Does your partner know your big vision? Do your kids? Do your mentors?

Today I’m with my friend Jenna Klopfenstein, who for years checked ALL the boxes of adult achievement: wonderful family, a great job, a beautiful home, but something was missing. In 2022, she left her job, and today, she’s going all-in on her entrepreneurial endeavors, starting with organizing a major event this spring, Next Level You Live.

If you know my story, then you know I hit rock bottom to get where I am today – but in today’s conversation, we discuss how you don’t NEED to hit rock bottom before making a big change.

The other big topic in today’s episode? OPEN CONVERSATION with both partners and kids, which Jenna says has been key in her listening to this inner voice and going from a “risk-averse” person to embracing the wild discomfort being bold in search  for something better.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    • How as we grow and evolve, our dreams naturally upgrade themselves. The dreams we had then might not be the ones we have now
    • The bravery it takes to walk away from something “good” – and how making ourselves uncomfortable is the only way we can really grow
    • How the idea of motherhood and retirement has shifted in the last several years, with more living for the “now” instead of planning to “live” in retirement
    • Techniques Jenna used to grow fast since leaving her job, from “crazy networking” to manifesting elements from her vision
    • Jenna’s event – Next Level You Live – this spring, which features a line of amazing speakers (including me!)
    • The importance of open communication, with partners and with kids – about what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and what we need in this season

  • Mini Episode: Does Making More Money Lighten the MotherLoad?

Would you feel like your motherload was lighter if you had more money?

I asked this question recently on social media and got more engagement on it than anything I’ve shared in quite awhile.

I think it’s an important question because, as high-achieving mothers, we’re often measuring the impact work has on mothering, and for a lot of us, money is at the core of that relationship. Our own family is reliant on me making money. Yes, I love to work, but I also NEED that money. That’s part of our lifestyle.

Things get complicated when we start looking at the amount of time it takes us to make money. Is your answer different if time DOESN’T factor so tightly into the equation? Where do you fall on the spectrum?

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    • How money COULD help with acquiring more help around the house – but also add more problems or take more time away from family
    • My own money mindset: where it comes from, how it impacts my ambition, and wanting to be a mom vs. the pressure of being a breadwinner
    • Effort vs. alignment – do you actually have to spend more hours away from your children to make more money? Or is it our own belief systems?
    • My programming to believe that to make more money, there needs to be MORE time/effort/strategy – and the proof around me that this isn’t always true
    • What could we do differently in our businesses to create more opportunities for revenue growth that don’t require more time?
    • No matter our work status – entrepreneurs, nine-to-fivers, stay-at-home moms or some combination – the money aspect of our identity is real for all of us

  • Rachel Pastor: Microdosing for Moms + an Intro to Inner Alchemy

One of my personal goals is to help women alchemize what’s inside of them and turn it into magic and creativity.

It’s the idea behind a new business I’m co-building – Inner Alchemy – with my friend Rachel Pastor. The intent of the company is to demystify microdosing and plant medicine and educate people on how to use it, with a combination of inner work to live the lives they’ve always dreamt of.

Rachel has an amazing story of overcoming drug addiction and finding herself again, which we discuss in this episode, in addition to the importance of self-worth; the lens of motherhood; and the effects of microdosing, which has been known to help with anxiety, depression, and ADHD.

It’s important to note we live in Colorado where microdosing has been decriminalized. We are not doctors, but we can speak from our own experiences. Our goal? To help people take agency over their lives, whether that be through inner work or through microdosing.

Be sure to follow us on @inneralchemyco!

In this episode you’ll hear about:

    • Rachel’s journey to here: being a teenage heroin addict; becoming homeless; losing her boyfriend to overdose; to having children and rebuilding herself
    • Working for Chris and Heidi Powell on Extreme Weight Loss on ABC – and her realization that she’d been living for external experiences
    • Her new  mission in life, which is to help people “come out of the matrix” through inner work and personal exploration
    • How motherhood and be the lens in which we see our pain, shame, and fears, and the darkness it can bring up for someone who’s been outwardly focused
    • Inner Alchemy, the reasons people microdose, and what protocol-based microdosing actually IS – like going to the gym with a workout plan
    • Microdosing misconceptions and its possible positive effects – for example, helping people feeling more present, creative, open-minded and optimistic
