Our negative thoughts can create anxiety, anger, resentment, jealousy—an array of emotions. Negative thinking is normal.

However, if this way of thinking becomes incessant, it can lead to depression and self-destructive behavior like addictions, derailing us from what we want most in life. At a minimum, negative thinking saps our energy, erodes our self-confidence, and can put us in a bad mood.

Certainly, many would agree that our thoughts come and go so quickly that it seems impossible to notice them, but with awareness and an attitude of self-compassion, we can redirect our negative thoughts to more positive ones.

Today we have a book review and it's called Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela.

I'm not really political in any way. I don't tend to understand a lot of the political aspects of life. I get a lot of grief for this in my own family, but I don't vote because I don't understand as much as I think I should in order to vote.

My vote would do injustice to whomever I voted for or didn't vote for because I'm not doing the necessary research. I have always respected Mandela, but I am not as familiar with his work.

But I heard that when Mandela walked into a room, everyone felt his presence. So I thought I might be interested in his story.

Good morning! Thank you for listening. I'm your host, Dean Booty.

According to a UCLA neuroscientist, we cannot focus on positive and negative feelings at the same time. This was a real gamechanger for me. There is no room inside your brain to think about both. So why the hell do we take up that valuable real estate in our brains with negative thoughts?

If you're focusing on positive things, you cannot be negative, down, depressed. The only way you can feel upset is when you think about negative feelings. It's easier said than done, I know.

But when we feel grateful, our brain releases dopamine, the reward chemical. The more gratitude we feel, the more rewards we receive.

I have been working more on my sleep recently. I have an Oura ring, which was an incredible investment. Sleep is so important to your emotions, your health, your well-being.

The emotions you fall asleep with are the emotions you wake up with. What are your last thoughts before you go to sleep? Are you conscious of them?

I wasn't planning for this. I am constantly stressing and thinking about all of my problems. When I woke up, I was thinking about them again.

Be intentional about your last thoughts and feelings before falling asleep. Try to have positive thoughts instead. It will greatly benefit us all.

We only notice salt when there is too much or not enough on our food.

When salt is used in the perfect amount, it goes unrecognized.

Salt is so humble. When something goes wrong, it takes the blame. When something goes right, it doesn't take the credit.

Our self-esteem battery is probably working on a low percentage, which is why we like to take the credit. I'm sure that's the case with me. Now that I'm aware of this, I can work to change it.
