This Memorial Day weekend, service men and women in the U.S. will be honored for their service and those who served will be remembered. Many of these celebrations will occur in backyards and over hot, smoky barbecue grills and cold, refreshing beverages.

What’s your favorite Gatlin Brother’s song?
The sounds of smooth country-pop will fill the air when singer/songwriter Larry Gatlin performs in concert Tuesday, April 5 at West Texas A&M University. The WTAMU School of Music will host the world-renowned singer at the Jack B. Kelley Student Center, Legacy Hall on campus.
The special event starts at 6 p.m. with a dinner, followed by a performance by Gatlin. The evening will highlight not only Gatlin’s well-known repertoire but also the establishment of a new scholarship honoring the singer’s wife, Janis Moss Gatlin. Janis, who grew up in Odessa, was once a student at WTAMU. The scholarship will benefit students in the University’s new music industry program in the School of Music and under the direction of Dr. Darrell Bledsoe, senior lecturer.
Gatlin, best known for his hits with the Gatlin Brothers, was born in Seminole and got his start in music as young boy singing in church and at the local radio station. As a student at the University of Houston, Gatlin joined a gospel group called the Imperials, which gave him the opportunity to meet Dottie West. That chance opportunity opened a door to Nashville and a solo deal with Monument in 1973. Albums and Top 20 hits soon followed. Gatlin’s brothers also started accompanying him on his records, and their number one hit, “All the Gold in California,” was recorded in 1979 under Gatlin’s new label, Columbia.
The Gatlin Brothers’ success earned them more Top 10 hits and another number one with the 1983 song “Houston (Means I’m One Day Closer to You).” The group retired in 1991, and Gatlin starred in the Broadway production of . Since then, the group has continued to perform at their theatre in Myrtle Beach, N.C., and record albums.
Tickets for the Gatlin event are priced at $50 per person. The deadline to reserve seats is Friday, April 1 at the WTAMU School of Music at 806-651-2840.
