They say that on a crisp, clear fall evening, if you happen to be in the right place, you can see glowing orbs of light bobbing up and down on Brown Mountain in western North Carolina. Wise County, Virginia, is full of history, from the early days of the pioneers, through the coal boom after the Civil War, to the Cold War (U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers grew up there). And Wise County is also home to more than its share of Appalachian folklore, from Jack tales to spooky stories. Today Steve and Gena tell you a couple of the latter, involving a vampire that supposedly lived in Big Stone Gap and a haunted rock that lay along the route from Norton to Wise.

In the early part of the 19th century Frederick Ross established his home along the Holston River, in what’s now Hawkins County, Tennessee. Unlike most of the other settlers in the region, though, his home was a mansion, surrounded by fields and worked by slaves. Named from the novel “Ivanhoe,” Rotherwood still exists as a historic building in Kingsport, Tennessee. It’s also the place where ghosts roam. For our lucky 13th podcast, Steve and Gena tell you about those ghosts.

Many years ago on the Virginia frontier, in what’s now West Virginia, a man sought room and board from a farmer. This man later got sick and died without benefit of the clergy of his choice.
