Mourning the Loss of Caleb Eisworth

Listen Later

Baton Rouge Police Chief TJ Morse joins the show to reflect on the tragic passing of Sergeant Caleb Eisworth, a 23-year veteran of the department who passed away after a 49-day battle with injuries sustained when he was intentionally struck on his way home from a shift. Eisworth, remembered as a devoted family man and community hero, showed signs of recovery before his condition worsened, leading his family to make a heartbreaking decision regarding his care. Funeral arrangements are being finalized, with the department and community preparing to honor his legacy.

Chief Morse emphasized the emotional toll on the department, noting the importance of mental health support for officers coping with grief, anger, and guilt. He highlighted ongoing efforts to provide counseling and foster a supportive environment, especially for those closest to Eisworth, including the Motor Division.

Despite the tragedy, the department has seen a positive trend in crime reduction. Morse reported a 30% decrease in shootings and declines in burglaries and robberies over the summer, attributing the progress to strategic patrols and partnerships. He also discussed preparations for the school year, including traffic enforcement in school zones and appreciation for crossing guards.

Looking ahead, the department is adjusting for increased activity during high school football season and major events, ensuring adequate security presence. Morse also mentioned the launch of a women’s self-defense class and the department’s support for the mayor’s Thrive Baton Rouge initiative, which could enhance police funding and services.

Addressing recent controversy, Morse defended the hiring of former constable Colby Burns, who had past charges expunged and met all qualifications. He emphasized the department’s commitment to training and evaluating new officers thoroughly.

Overall, the conversation highlighted the department’s resilience, commitment to public safety, and dedication to honoring one of their own.
