Gabe Grunewald – Minnesota native, former Golden Gopher star, professional runner, cancer survivor, and Brave Like Gabe foundation founder -- is someone we can all learn from. She became an NCAA All-American, a USATF national champion, and an Olympic contender, all after being diagnosed with cancer in 2009. She's bravely endured multiple bouts of two distinct forms of the disease over the ensuing decade. On September 26, 1972, Steve Gathje went for a run. Nixon was president and a gallon of gas cost 36 cents. Gathje ran every day afterward for 45 years and 10 month. Every. Single. Day. On his wedding day. On each of the days his four children were born. On the day he got stranded in Newark Airport and knocked out a run in the parking lot. Through blizzards and polar vortexes. Through it all. Gathje's streak ended on July 28, 2018, when, after weeks of severe pain in his hip, he learned he had osteoarthritis and would need surgery and an artificial hip. Mile in My Shoes co-founders Mishka Vertin and Mike Jurasits and program member Geno Benshoof visit the podcast to talk about how the nonprofit uses running to empower members of the homeless, immigrant, refugee and incarcerated community. In this month’s episode of Move. Together., we talk with long-time runner Dorothy Marden. At 81 years-old, Dorothy is the oldest entrant in the 10 mile race at next month’s Twin Cities Orthopedics’ Women Run the Cities, presented by PNC Bank.

Dorothy, who has been a runner since 1984, has the unique perspective of watching running evolve over the decades she’s been involved the activity. Dorothy shares stories about how she came to running, found friendships, ran marathons, continues to compete regularly as an octogenarian and is the matriarch of a three-generation runner family.
