To reach one’s full fitness potential, I believe one must progress and “master” each of the 4 C’s.:

1. Competency (of movement)

2. Confidence (with movement)

3. Capacity (to perform more movement)

4. Comprehension (of movement and fitness)

However, some children have developmenta delaysl (e.g. roll, crawl, sit up, balance on knee(s) or may lack the basic motor control, balance or stability needed to perform fundamental movements ( e.g. squat, lunge, climb, run, kick, swing) without loss of form, technique or incurring injury.

So then what happens when a child “lags” behind her peers in play or sports competency? She stops performing the task(s) because of embarrassment, peer judgement, ridicule and eventually shame. The child loses confidence and stops practicing the movement, developing less skill and an aversion to the activity.

This podcast provides an example from my personal experience growing up in a predominately white, suburban neighborhood and experiencing shame and performance anxiety.

What does “physical fitness” mean to the therapist, coach or trainer and what does it mean to the client?

Communication and comprehension are both key components to the success of your client’s performance. Being bogged down with finding the absolute, perfect definition of “physical fitness” (a malleable term that will most likely evolve with time) is less important than explaining the rationale behind the why and how we test individual physical fitness.

Dr. Bo and I dig a bit deeper in part 2 of our Defining Fitness series. We discuss the primary components of physical fitness and why they are important.

First of all, for a working definition of physical fitness, I use the capacity to perform work without injury.

Hopefully you'll see how this definition can apply to anyone --- the runner, dancer, drummer, Crossfitter, the construction worker--- anyone who moves and breathes.

With a working definition, I can now break physical fitness down to it’s bare bone, the essential components which I call them the 4 C’s of Physical Fitness (see full blog What Does Physical Fitness Mean to You and the 4 C’s of Fitness @ [hyperlink]

Do you have the capacity to move through work, life and play or run from  zombies without suffering injury or death?

As a Physical Therapist, Strength and Conditioning Coach and educator, I find it uber important to be clear with our terminology when speaking to clients about training, workouts, programing, etc.

Defining “fitness” is no exception. If we are teaching our clients to be “fit” without explaining the “what”, “why”, “how” and“when”, then we are no better than  the majority of other folks out our there, throwing this word around like "mobility" and "cardio".

However, if we create solid standards to define fitness, than we will not only be able to have a more productive conversation with our clients, but can now also measure  fitness levels and prescribe the right client-specific program targeting the client's  full fitness potential. These standards would apply to the athlete, musician, performing artist, construction worker --- anyone who is breathing.

My friend and colleague,  Dr. Bo Babenko and I do our best to simplify, quantify and qualify a working definition of "fitness" so our clients (and you) can apply  this new knowledge and understanding  to improve their health, well-being and overall survival rate!
