  • Press Play: Watch "The Prestige" with Us!

How can a movie be so rich and complex and powerful (and have one of the best endings ever) and yet still be so underrated? Well join us as we take on Jake's favorite all time movie - and only our second ever Christopher Nolan deep dive after "Tenet." This movie has tons of layers, between magic and real life history, and it's also Nolan's most meta-movie about filmmaking so we have a ton to get into.
We press play on the movie 15-seconds in! We talk about:

    • The connections to Memento
    • Audience confusion between three different magician movies in 2006
    • The parallels between this magician rivalry and the greatest scientific rivalry in history
    • Why the drowning scene feels so helpless and different from every other
    • How unique yet stacked the cast is, and what they all bring to their roles
    • How every visual shot and line of dialog is important, there's no wasted space
    • The complex timelines and storytelling devices used
    • Just how many hints there are to the ending, but, even after you've seen it, how it just gets better
    • How it's Nolan's most minimal and kind of forgettable score
    • The meta-nature of Nolan illustrating directors as magicians, and we point out all the slight-of-hand the movie does

    and much, much more!

  • Press Play: Watch "The Matrix" with Us!

This was our first ever fan club exclusive is also a completely different format than we've ever done before.  It took a bit to get used to doing a commentary and not feeling like we need to fill every second. So jack in by watching the full movie along with us, or unplug by playing the audio version while you watch along at home.
Yeah, we also did a full episode on all four Matrix movies for the regular show, and got deep into the themes and meaning and characters, but it's so different to be watching The Matrix all together.  Partly because it's such a visually stunning film with so many iconic shots and groundbreaking effects.
We open with a brief welcome and share some plans and dreams for the Fan Club.  Then at 3:02 we synchronize pressing play to watch the full movie from beginning to end together.
    We talk about..

    • how the movie was saved from almost casting an extremely different Neo
    • if the Oracle had magic cookies
    • how most people remember the movie as more green than it actually is
    • which stunts injured the performers
    • what song's missing from the soundtrack
    • how the (then) Wachowski brothers wanted to make all the avatars trans
    • and investigate if www.whatisthematrix.com (password: steak) is still online

  • Top 10: Endings and Goodbyes

The ending of a movie may be the most important part, because nothing else can completely redeem a movie you hated, or completely ruin something you really enjoyed. We list our top 10 movie endings ever, plus recap the life of the podcast and say our goodbyes in our last episode. It's been an amazing five and a half years, and we really want to thank you for going on this ride with us. We also take some time to discuss what comes next, and other great movie podcasts you should switch to in our absence - so stick around for all that (plus a little post-credits Easter egg at the very end).

Before that, we wrap up the 2025 movie draft, recapping how our picks did and crowning a champion. Dustin also gives spoiler-free first impressions for Better Watch Out, David, and Wake Up Deadman. Jake shares his thoughts on The Family Stone, Living with Yourself, The Diplomat, Soulmates, and Stranger Things Season 5 Volume 2.

We love you and we'll miss you. If you're interested, follow Dustin's personal instagram and book youtube for updates on his next book and tour coming this spring. Follow Jake's new podcast for continued shenanigans with his co-host and wife, Christy - @Master.Daters on Instagram and TikTok.

  • Festivus Special: Our Biggest Movie Pet Peeves

It is truly a Festivus for the rest of us! We bring a pretty extensive airing of grievances as it pertains to movies. We complain about a wide variety of very serious and very petty issues, and have a great time doing it. No target is off limits, as a highlight movies, writers, celebrities, advertising, and even you, the audience. But we didn't have time to touch on everything, so let us know in the comments or on Instagram what your biggest movie pet peeves are!

Before that, Dustin gives spoiler-free first impressions of Five Nights at Freddy's 2, Jay Kelly, and Fat Man. Jake has recently watched The Sacrifice, The Watcher, The Beast in Me, and most of The Guilty.

  • Top 10: Adventure

Well it's finally happened, we kept our long-standing promise to finally split up our top 10 adventure movies which were originally lumped in with top 10 action. It's a very exciting time, especially because we intentionally snub some of the most obvious and cliche picks so we can include our personal favorites that deserve more recognition. Tune in and let us know if we missed your favorite adventure movies as well!

Before that, Dustin gives spoiler-free first impressions of Now You See Me: Now You Don't, Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, Carry On, and both he and Jake discuss briefly first part of Stranger Things final season. Jake has also seen Roofman, Red Sonja, Merry Ex-Mas, Hot Frosty, Things Heard & Seen, and Zootopia 2.

  • Press Play: Watch "Tombstone" with Us

To accompany our discussion on historical accuracy, enjoy this full-movie bonus episode where we sit down to watch an entire movie together. Sync the audio with your copy of Tombstone at home, or watch the full movie with us on Spotify.

In this commentary we watch one of the westerns we both love the most!  When we're not enjoying the movie, we get into all this and more:

    • How much of the history is actually incredibly accurate (and discuss why it made sense to deviate when it did)
    • How Wyatt Earp (the man) impacted Western movies in early Hollywood
    • Jake gives and old timey English lesson translating all the strange phrases
    • What makes this western different
    • The lack of masculine heroes in movies today
    • How Val Kilmer's Doc Holiday deserves as much recognition as Heath Ledger's Joker
    • The insane number of major actors in small roles
    • The competition between this and Kevin Costner's "Wyatt Earp" movie that came out right after
    • Is this the most accessible western movie?
    • How key Kurt Russel was to the movie's success, mostly behind the scenes
    • and how short America's history really is

  • Reviewing Historical Accuracy in Movies

This episode we are FINALLY joined by one of our favorite podcasters and Movie Bonerz Awards presenters - Brian Ruppert from the Reviewing History Podcast. We get deep into some of the most accurate and least accurate movies based on a true story. We also discuss historical movies in general - debating to what extent accuracy matters and how the audience and the subjects in the film can be affected. It's an amazing time, so check it out and check out Reviewing History and their holiday special Bandcamp promotion

Before that, Jake gives spoiler-free first impressions after watching "Megadoc," the making of Megalopolis documentary, and also season 4 of Stranger Things ahead of the final season in a couple weeks. Dustin hasn't watched anything new, but Brian gives thoughts on a pair of kids movies: Stitch Head and Leo.

  • Top 10: Scariest Non-Horror Movies

Hopefully you don't have Christmas decorations up yet, because we're extending the spooky season just a little bit. Have you ever wondered, if you remove the jokes, how scary that comedy actually is? Are you still traumatized by that "family-friendly" fantasy movie from your youth? We realized there are many very scary movies outside the horror genre, so we've each compiled our top ten most horrific, and they are all over the spectrum. Dustin also rewatches a movie he swore he'd never watch again!

Before that, Dustin gives his spoiler-free first impressions of 28 Years Later, Bring Her Back, and Triangle (2009). Jake has been watching Netflix and shares thoughts on The Perfect Neighbor documentary, The Woman in Cabin 10, and both season 1 and 2 of Nobody Wants This. Jake also has been catching up on horror/thrillers from the early 2000s, and finally watched Joy Ride and The Ring for the first time.

Stay tuned to the end of the episode for a very important podcast announcement, and let us know what non-horror movies you find scariest of all!

  • Let's Watch 10 Random Movies (again)

A couple months ago that we spun the wheel of random movies and selected 10 on the show. Well we finally watch them all and have a lot of thoughts. What a random mix of films, some very good, some very, very bad. Check out the highlight at the top of our Instagram profile for which movies we picked and where you can watch them, largely for free. We learned how Gene Kelly broke into Hollywood, we debate the empowerment vs exploitation of extensive nude scenes, and in a totally separate movie Jake worries he may have accidentally downloaded and sent Dustin porn with a yeti in it. ....yeah.

Before that, Dustin gives spoiler free first impressions of the remade "Salem's Lot (2024) and also M3GAN 2.0. Jake of course is watching Love is Blind: Denver and The Golden Bachelor, but actually has important recommendations in "Chad Powers" and a really unique indie film called "Hellbender" (2021).

  • Press Play: Watch "Hereditary" with Us

We're filling the gap in our delayed Random 10 episode with our second of the commentary format episodes - just in time for spooky season! This movie has come up on the show many times in the past, but it's so rich and deep and brilliant that it made complete sense to break down the whole thing scene by scene. Just in time for Halloween, join us as we watch Hereditary and chat all the way through it.
    We also get into...

    • Ari Aster and how he's the new generation's Shyamalan
    • How Toni Collette just doesn't get the credit she deserves
    • Why the scariest parts of this movie aren't even the demon trying to possess them
    • Has A24 peaked and gone too mainstream?  Is Neon filling that void now?
    • Which effects and stunts were practical
    • The one scene that Jake could live without
    • And most importantly, all the ways that mental trauma is a secret foreshadowing of the possessions and how the demon manifests
