Movie Chumps episodes

  • Episode 78: The Natural
Guest extraordinaire Mike Pagano stops by the pod...and has nitpicks galore about the film he JUST watched for the first time. Surprisingly, Luke & Corrye think the nitpicks are legit.
The Chumps dive into: the father-son theme, Redford's age in real life: was it a problem?
PLUS: What the movie got WRONG about the game of baseball; All the Buffalo & WNY filming locations; The groovy backstory to bat boy Bobby Savoy; and Corrye keeps bringing up Joe Rogan's plumber. Finally: Luke's tale of meeting Michael "Bump Bailey" Madsen!

  • Episode 77: Blade Runner 2049
Ryan Gosling fits into the Blade Runner world like a glove. Harrison Ford still runs like he did at the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Meanwhile, women finally get their due in key roles; Jared Leto is creepy but convincing; and Corrye paraphrases The Rock when discussing the age-old question that continues in this sequel: is Deckard a replicant? The Chumps explore how the film adds to the debate.

  • Episode 76: Blade Runner (1982)
Blade Runner's stunning atmosphere and visuals? They're matched only by Corrye's articulation of humanity and how it looms large in Ridley Scott's picture. The fellas play hardball, quickly tackling the "is Deckard a replicant" question right out of the gate. PLUS: Luke is perplexed by the lack of security at the Tyrell Corporation and complains (again!) about movie criticism; Corrye stumps Luke in 5 Questions; and the "hidden" gem outside Rochester where Corrye and Luke stumbled into each other.
    1 hr 29 min
  • Episode 75: JFK
A true "who's who" of casting, including a bunch comedians that arguably steal the show: John Candy, Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon. The Chumps believe Oliver Stone's heart is in the right place, even if his film is full of fake facts and omissions. JFK is a masterpiece of editing, but that's not all the filmmakers got right. Luke & Corrye pluck out some of the genius storytelling moves, while trying not to get too deep into the myriad of conspiracy theories. PLUS: Luke debuts his wacky new "smoking" segment (which Corrye has brilliantly named).

  • Episode 74: There Will Be Blood
A 21st century masterpiece! Corrye explains why this should have won Best Picture over No Country For Old Men. Luke ponders if Paul Dano (as good as he is in here) kind of got lucky.
Corrye's impression of Daniel Plainview sounds more like Plainview somehow than Daniel Day-Lewis. PLUS: Luke floats a new ridiculous segment which triggers a delightful tale of Corrye's mother's love of smoking.
    1 hr 32 min
  • Episode 73: The Suicide Squad (2021)
To paraphrase Corrye Cook: director James Gunn makes Disney eat crow! The filmmaker turns in arguably the best DC movie yet! We liked A LOT of this colorful funhouse of a film. The Chumps welcome an old friend, and ask: Was there "enough Stallone" in King Shark? Is this the Goodfellas of comic book films, in terms of soundtrack? Who would YOU choose for your own Suicide Squad (film villains only)? Who's Milton? PLUS: A small ode to Robin Williams.
    1 hr 39 min
  • Episode 72: Predator (1987)
The Chumps marvel at how long it took them to cover a Schwarzenegger film...and then (facepalm!) remember at the end they already covered Conan the Barbarian. Luke delivers the most absurd 5 Questions yet! Corrye reminds listeners of Arnold's intelligence and drive. Luke questions Billy's tracking skills in the jungle. Corrye sneaks in about 47 Arnold impressions. PLUS: the now-iconic meme-happy handshake, Van Damme, and Bill Duke's head explosion.
    1 hr 18 min
  • Episode 71: Silence (2016)
Forget the notion that this is "lesser Scorsese." Marty's 30-year passion project truly comes to fruition, with Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver skillfully riding shotgun. Luke & Corrye share their own stories of faith, amid their dissection of this grueling and unforgettable "difficult watch."
    1 hr 18 min
  • Episode 70: The Wolf of Wall Street
Corrye calls it "a 3-hour drug-addled fever dream." Luke wonders if it's more of a glorification of the glamorous life...or a cautionary tale. We hail Jonah Hill for outclassing everyone ("Steeeve Madden!"). Corrye mounts the old soapbox to throw grenades at some of the
movie's "haters." The two Jon Bernthal lines that tickled the Chumps' fancy. The two Rochester connections to this film. PLUS: one of the weirdest but memorable musical guest introductions on Saturday Night Live (from the 1990s) somehow gets referenced.
    1 hr 18 min
  • Episode 69: The Departed
Luke and Corrye probably shouldn't have brought up one particular mini-monologue by Alec Baldwin before pressing record. The Departed feels like an NBA all-star game...except everyone is trying really hard, and the game is actually GOOD. Corrye waxes philosophical on the theme of identity, while Luke rattles off some of the more quotable lines that should be pop culture royalty by now. PLUS: research revelations that include the film's Hong Kong influence, the Xs used by Scorsese, and the criminally underrated Vera Farmiga.

About Movie Chumps

From the publisher's feed

Luke Mayo, Corrye Cooke and their locker room of oddball buddies over-analyze a wild mix of films. What's profound? What's ridiculous? We like to think of ourselves as the Beyonce of movie podcasts…
