Movie Mandates

Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme!  For the rest of the year, we're celebrating movies where The Sequel's Better.  This month we're watching my picks: BATTLE ROYALE and its sequel, BATTLE ROYALE II: REQUIEM.  Yes, the "dump a class of high schoolers on an island with a bunch of weapons and make them kill each other" movie that no one wanted to release in America back in 2000.  Can't imagine why.

Anyway, I remember liking the first one and being amazed at what a step up its sequel was.  Does my memory suck or did I have crap taste in my 20s?  This week we'll discuss the first movie; next week, its sequel.  Then, in December, Keleigh will pick another movie and its superior sequel for us to gab about.

Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme!  This month we're watching movies with Memorable Posters so I mandated a movie I remember sitting on video store shelves when I was a kid: PORKY'S.  The classic poster depicts an eye peeping at a showering woman through a hole in the wall.

What's the movie about?  Who is Porky and why does the title use a possessive?  I don't know!  I never read the back of the box but its front sure left a lasting impression!

Unfortunately, their story took place in a country we've never been and in a decade prior to our births so we'd never heard of them.

Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme!  This month on Movie Mandates we're Seeing Double, which is our too clever by half way of saying movies with twins.  Up first is my mandated movie: Goodnight Mommy.  The original Austrian one, not the American remake staring Naomi Watts.  Hmm, you know, come to think of it, Naomi Watts has been in a bunch of horror remakes: The Ring, Funny Games, and this one.  What's up with that?

Anyway, Goodnight Mommy is about twin boys who aren't convinced their mother is really their mother.  Are they nuts?  Is she nuts?  Are we nuts?  Are you nuts?

Whatever the case may be, use your own discretion when watching because this episode contains nuts.

Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme!  Black and White month concludes with Keleigh's pick, PERSEPOLIS, a movie that made the color drain from her face when it started in color.  But, it's only a few scenes; most of the movie is in black and white so it counts.

But, at some point.  One of us is going to mistakenly mandate a movie that doesn't match the month's theme, or accidentally watch the wrong movie.  We've had a few close calls but if we do this show long enough, it's bound to happen!

Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme!  Dinosaurs month concludes with Keleigh's mandated movie: ONE OF OUR DINOSAURS IS MISSING!  A very not racist Disney movie from the 1975 fearing a large cast of Chinese characters played by white guys!  Except for that one dude way in the background.  See him?  No, not that one.  That's a white guy in yellowface too.  A bit to the left.  Nope that's also a white guy.  Further to the left.  Yeah, there he is!

Now, before you start bringing out the pitchforks, remember, China wasn't discovered until 1978 and Disney felt really bad when they learned that they could have been using Chinese actors this whole time.  If only they'd known of their existence!

Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme!  We're closing out The Streisand Effect with a movie that did not want people paying attention to it for the reason people were paying attention to it.  Due to workplace safety issues, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed with a prop gun wielded by actor Alec Baldwin during the production.  Understandably, that tragedy is the only thing many people know about the film and the only thing that many people talk about regarding the film.

And that includes us.  But other than that, Mr. Lincoln, how was the play?
