Movie Producers Rachel Tan & Dan Mark - How Chinese Conquer Racism, Prejudice in Hollywood, USA
Is it a case of ‘from the frying pan into the fire’? Rachel Tan, a Malaysian ex-beauty queen, lawyer and model and her husband Dan Mark, also a lawyer of Chinese origin, found themselves in America well over a decade ago, after having left their respective homelands to escape racism and prejudice .. only to find America as racist and prejudiced as their own homelands.
However, the question at hand is whether America, whose own success was largely borne from immigrants, is still the land of opportunity. Especially when the industry in question is Entertainment, notoriously one of the most competitive and difficult to conquer.
Some facts to ponder (extracted from King Street Pictures’ website):
- According to the MPAA, Asians had the highest rate of moviegoing among all ethnic groups in the U.S. in 2016.
Who will tell these stories if we do not?
(Many thanks to CITYPlus for their collaboration with The Do More Podcast, in whose studio this conversation was recorded. CITYPlus is Malaysia's first Chinese business radio station, dedicated to delivering in-depth analysis on local and international current affairs, markets, and businesses.)
