Fun and entertaining are two adjectives that easily describe Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. This new release has been a surprise hit at the box office and for those that sit down to give it a watch. Written and directed by the same duo that did Game Night, John Francis Daly and Jonathan Goldstein, created a movie that is wonderfully paced and laughable at many times. It features Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Hugh Grant, Justice Smith, and Sophia Lillis. Coming in at just over two hours, this movie should be added to your watch list in theaters or once available for rent at home.

One of the unique features of this script is how quickly it gets into the adventure of the movie. Even though the movie features magic, wizards, monsters, trolls, and humans, at no point does the movie describe the universe or how it came to be. Allowing the audience to get involved with the story and the characters immediately hook them in from the get-go and progress the story towards what the audience wants to see... an adventure.

DC Studios' latest release is Shazam! Fury of the Gods was released on March 17th, 2023. Starring Zachary Levi as the title character, this sequel features some solid CGI and directing but doesn’t match the previous installment's story. In this Instant Reaction episode in the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler Valencia gives his spoiler-free breakdown of the movie including plot holes, changes to the original story, cameos, and his favorite character. Unfortunately, this sequel falls victim to the curse of follow-ups but in Tyler’s opinion doesn’t fall on the director's shoulders. This movie is well-directed and paced, and the CGI is definitely high quality.

Before this movie's release, the news of James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over DC Studios and planning a reboot shocked all comic book movie fans. While many fans are excited about this reboot, the negative cloud of uncertainty impacted the casual fans who wanted to see this movie. Although released at a time of certainty, this Shazam installment definitely answers the question of if Shazam will be around for DC’s new extended universe.

One of the biggest movies to hit theaters so far in 2023 is John Wick 4. After three action-packed installments, could director Chad Stahelski pull it off again? The answer is an emphatic yes and some more butt-kicking on top! This installment in the series features more martial arts sequences, car chases, and stunts, leaving the audience wondering where the time went with this almost three-hour movie. The quality of horror films have evolved over the last decade and movies like Barbarian really showcase the improvements in script, acting, and directing. Barbarian, which is written and directed by Zach Credgger, stars Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgard, and Justin Long. This 2022 horror film goes off the premise of what happens when an AirBnB is accidentally double booked but also is not just a regular AirBnB. The latest addition to the Creed and Rocky franchises is Creed III. Released on March 3rd, 2023, Creed III packs a punch and is another great addition to the Creed franchise. This installment follows Adonis Creed's post fighting career and him trying to integrate into fatherhood. Michael B. Jordan stars and directs, and is accompanied by one of the hottest names in Hollywood, Jonathan Majors. It’s an impressive directorial debut for Jordan, which features scenes and action that other Rocky and Creed installments never attempted. Of course we get the inspirational training montages, Rocky/Creed callbacks, and same level of acting we’ve seen in other installments, but this one really focuses on Adonis’s past and how it’s affecting his current life.

Nothing like a great comedy series to binge on the weekend or catch up on after work. Our Rankings episodes within the MovieBuffs Podcast are spoiler free and hopefully an episode to help you find something to add to your watchlist. In this episode, host Tyler Valencia ranks Hacks, Dave, and Party Down. These three series already have two seasons available to watch and will be releasing (or already released, Party Down) their third season in 2023.

Hacks, available on HBOMax is a series that features Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder in a comedy star-writer relationship. Smart, who has already won two Emmys for her role as Deborah Vance, plays a one-time legendary Las Vegas comedian as she tries to revive her career. As a last ditch effort she is sent a writer on their last leg (Einbinder) and despite being polar opposites, find themselves reviving Deborah’s comedic career.

Dave, a Hulu show that is loosely based on Lil Dickey’s rap career, is a comedy series that showcases his quest to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. This show intertwines some of the outlandish storylines with real life issues that most primetime series will not touch with a ten foot pole. Season three is releasing on April 5th and a great watch if you’re already a fan of shows like Hacks or Workaholics.

Lastly, Party Down which is available on Starz follows a catering service full of trying actors and writers. Party Down is a great show to pop on for an instant mood boost and has a new storyline each episode with a stacked cast of comedians. This comedy series is led by Adam Scott, Lizzy Caplin, and Martin Starr.

Binge watching season is in full effect and 2023 is loaded with new shows coming out. But what about the current series that you can watch without having to wait till next week for a new episode? In this Rankings episode of the MovieBuffs Podcast, host Tyler Valencia goes over Mo (Netflix), Season 2 of Hunters (Amazon Prime), and Kaleidoscope (Netflix).

Mo is in its first season on Netflix and has already been renewed for a second season. It tells the story of Mo Najjar who is always one step away from deportation or finally gaining U.S. citizenship for himself and his family. If you’re a fan of Ramy on Hulu, you’ll like the similarities in this show. Season 2 of Hunters follows the remaining crew as they are finally on the path to killing Hitler. This season features more flashbacks which are used to help tie up any loose ends for the final season. Kaleidoscope is a unique idea from Netflix that markets this series as one that provides a different perspective depending on what episode you start the series with. It is a heist series that features a lot of backstories as they build up the anticipation of what really happened during the heist episode.

Welcome to Chippendales, available on Hulu, is an origin story of the famous Chippendales dancers. Kumail Nanjiani plays the lead role and founder of Chippendales, as this series includes all the dirty stories that made this brand the power it is today.

Lastly, Jack Ryan Season Three on Amazon Prime is a new installment in the Tom Clancy series. Season three follows John Krasinksi (Jack Ryan) as he works to unfold an attempt by Russia to trigger a worldwide war with the Western Powers.
