It seems like every successful movie these days seems to get a sequel. It’s hard to capture lightning in a bottle twice, so some sequels lean so heavily on the concept of the first film that it feels lazy, while others reinvent the wheel a little too vigorously, resulting in a sequel that loses its connection to what made the first movie so famous. That’s what makes crafting a sequel so tricky, and only in sporadic cases are sequels better than their predecessors. Yet, some of the greatest films ever made are sequels: Movies like The Dark Knight, The Godfather Part II, Toy Story 3, The Empire Strikes Back and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
