Christian Zyp, Lucas Anders and Mark Davies have a roundtable discussion about the Oscar Nominations for 2023. Instead of examining every category, they discuss favorite acting nominee, sound/visual effects, screenplay, best picture and the biggest oversight of the Oscars this year.
Christian Zyp speaks with Chelsea McMullen (co-writer/co-director) about the film EVER DEADLY. It weaves concert footage with stunning sequences filmed on location in Nunavut, seamlessly bridging landscapes, stories and songs with pain, anger and triumph—all through the expressions of Tanya Tagaq, one of the most innovative musical performers of our time. EVER DEADLY screens at Metro Cinema Wed Jan 25th at 6:30 pm & Sun Jan 29th at 3:30 pm.
Christian Zyp gives you a sample of some of our favorite interviews from MOVING RADIO over the last year. Listen to segments of interviews from Gary Snow (FRIENDLY LOCAL GAME STORE), Joe Hunting (WE MET IN REALITY), Riley Stearns (DUAL), Fran Strine & Ray Parker Jr. (WHO YA GONNA CALL?), Brandon Rhiness (GROTESQUE), Omar Mouallem (THE LAST BARON) and Scott Lebrecht (JURASSIC PUNK).
For the annual CRUEL X-MAS watch, Christian Zyp punishes the eyes of Mark Davies and Lucas Anders by having them watch the animated Christmas special "Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe in Santa".
Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe in Santa is a CGI musical Christmas special that aired once during the 2002 holiday season in syndication and on WB+ (a prepackaged channel for smaller markets). Since it never aired again after that, it was considered to be lost for over a decade. It finally resurfaced on the Internet in 2015 to widespread mockery for its extremely poor quality, most notably its unfinished, stiff, dated (even for its era) computer animation. The plot of the special focuses on a spoiled rich girl named Nicole (Paige O'Hara) throwing away a teddy bear given by one of her classmates and later scrambling to find it after learning of its sentimental background.
Lindsey Campbell and Mark Davies examine another film funded by Telefilm to see if it worth appreciating. This time it's Sook-Yin Lee's film OCTAVIO IS DEAD. A cryptic tale with no lack of sexual undertones, Octavio is Dead! follows Tyler (Sarah Gadon) on an adventure of self-discovery.
In OCTAVIO IS DEAD Tyler escapes her overbearing mother (Rosanna Arquette) and travels to the rich and surreal world of her deceased father, Octavio (Raoul Trujillo), a father she never knew. She discovers that “the past is never dead” as she navigates her own sexual identity and the occult. Her ability to know the difference between fantasy and reality becomes an obstacle for Tyler, and she speaks to her late father who tells her that “you can’t hide forever.”
Christian Zyp interviews Michael Patrick Lilly (Chief Creative Officer of FACTORY FILM STUDIO. Thye discuss the move to Edmonton and the project filming in Edmonton, RED PINE CITY. Frank A. Caruso helms the production with Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight, The Expendables), Rick Ravanello and Elise Muller star.

Jack’s best friend documents his three-year quest to die a happy man, culminating in a permanent going-away party.
Christian Zyp interviews Dave Rodden Short (dir/screenwriter) about his documentary THE EMPRESS OF VANCOUVER. You can see it as part of CUFF.Docs 2022 Sat Nov 26th @ 7:00 pm at the Globe CInema in Calgary.
THE EMPRESS OF VANCOUVER is a cinematic and intimate collision of drag, queer history, and performance art, that follows trans icon Oliv Howe as she prepares for the 40th anniversary of her coronation. A genre bending irreverent documentary that blends archival footage, musical elements and just the right amount of dark humour, THE EMPRESS OF VANCOUVER is a journey through the history of LGBTQ+ rights and recognition in Canada, and a loving tribute to those lost during the AIDS epidemic.
Christian Zyp interviews Brian D. Johnson (dir) about his documentary THE COLOUR OF INK. It screens as part of CUFF.Docs Thurs Nov 24th @ 6:30 pm at the Globe Cinema in Calgary.
THE COLOUR OF INK uncovers the mystery and power of our oldest medium through the eyes of Jason Logan, a Toronto inkmaker. Harvesting colours from the natural world—weeds, berries, bark, flowers, rocks, rust—he makes ink from just about anything. Ink is our primal medium. It has always been with us, inscribing the evolution of humanity. Working with ingredients foraged in the wild, Jason sends custom-made inks to an eclectic range of artists around the world, from a New Yorker cartoonist to a Japanese calligrapher. As the inks take on a life of their own, his playful alchemy paints a story of colour that reconnects us to the earth and returns us to a childlike sense of wonder.
Christian Zyp interviews Ted Stenson (dir/screenwriter) about his documentary LIVING WITHOUT MENACE. It screens as part of CUFF.Docs Nov. 26th, 2022 @ 2:15 PM at the Globe Cinema in Calgary.
LIVING WITHOUT MENACE examines how for over 70 years, Alberta has been the only inhabited part of the planet without rats. But with the emergence of several ambitious, ecologically-focused rat eradication efforts in other parts of the world, what does the future hold for Alberta's iconic “Rat Patrol”?
