Meanwhile, one professional hunter leads the charge to undermine the competition, questioning what hides beneath the python mania gripping the ‘glades. The film, which had its World Premiere at SXSW, is the feature documentary debut of CUFF alum Xander Robin, who attended CUFF in 2017 for the Canadian Premiere of his first narrative feature ARE WE NOT CATS.

  • #SKODEN - Damien Eagle Bear Interview

Christian Zyp interviews Damien Eagle Bear (director/producer) about his documentary #SKODEN. See it as part of CUFF.Docs on Saturday November 22nd at 2:30 pm at the Globe Cinema in Calgary. Director Damien Eagle Bear & Subject Mark Brave Rock in attendance.

Every meme has its story. #skoden delves into the origins of NDN country’s most iconic meme to redefine the man at the center of it all, Pernell Bad Arm. In the early days of social media, a notorious image circulated of an Indigenous man with raised fists, ready to strike. The photo was initially shared to mock and reinforce stereotypes of Indigenous peoples, but one word added to the image would change it forever. #skoden – an Indigenous shortening of “let’s go then” – ignited an instant Indigenous pop culture icon that spread like wildfire across Turtle Island and beyond. But underneath the viral fame was a kind and generous Blackfoot man from Kainai who faced immense challenges while living on the streets. This documentary seeks to reclaim Pernell’s humanity, offering a deeper, more complex portrait of the man behind the meme. This is his story.

  • NECHAKO: IT WILL BE A BIG RIVER AGAIN - Lyana Patrick Inerview

Christian Zyp interviews Lyana Patrick (writer/director) about the documentary NECHAKO: IT WILL BE A BIG RIVER AGAIN. See it as part of the Broad View International Film Festival on Saturday November 15 at 1pm at Metro Cinema.

NECHAKO: IT WILL BE A BIG RIVER AGAIN is a crucial documentary from Lyana Patrick that follows two Indigenous Nations fighting for our collective future. When the Kenney Dam was built in the 1950s, it diverted 70 percent of the Nechako River into an artificial reservoir, severely impacting the lives of local Stellat’en and Saik’uz Nations. What followed were decades of resistance, including legal actions against the Canadian federal and provincial governments and Rio Tinto Alcan, a subsidiary of a global mining conglomerate.

NECHAKO: IT WILL BE A BIG RIVER AGAIN follows the people fighting today to restore a river and a way of life: Nations going up against industry, community leaders advocating for their people, Elders documenting their histories and community members living off the land. An urgent call to action, Patrick’s film asks what survival looks like when it serves everyone, in a story 70 years in the making—a story of hope and resistance against all odds, amidst large-scale environmental destruction and despite the will of powerful institutions.
