  • Prepare, Practice, Play with The Brand X Method™ | Episode 8

The Brand X Method™ has been in the business of doing what's best for kids and teens for over 20 years.  I have been an avid follower of them for much of that time, using their methodology in my PE classes and while coaching.  Their approach to youth fitness is refreshing; when others are trying to get their kids to specialize and increase movement intensity, they are doing the opposite.  This allows them to build a more solid and well-rounded foundation, being able to apply that to whatever activity they want to pursue.
From their website, "The mastery, confidence, and motivation that kids develop in our gyms are the ingredients of freedom and fearlessness. The Brand X Method™ instills the essence of adventure, passion, and joy in kids and teens when playing their favorite sports, trying new things, and tackling life’s challenges so they can step out of our gyms knowing they can do whatever they set out to do."

In this episode we talk about Jeff, Mikki, and Keegan Martin about:

    • Sports burn out
    • Physical Literacy
    • The importance of unstructured play
    • The influence of technology
    • Teaching kids about nutrition

  • Becoming a College Athlete with Seth Johnston and Joe Clarke of Brockport Basketball | Episode 7

Want to know what college recruiters are looking for in their athletes?  Should you specialize in a sport at a young each to reach that level?

The State University of New York College at Brockport has been a powerhouse in the Division III Men's Basketball scene for years.  Their fast-paced style of play has produced 9 conference championship teams and several appearances in the NCAA Division III Championship tournament.  One of those appearances was in the 2006-2007 season where they reached the Elite 8, and Seth and Joe were both players on that team.

This 2019-2020 season was on track to be one of their best ever with a 26-3 record, and ranking as high as 11th on D3HOOPS.com.  Just as they reached the Sweet Sixteen in the tournament, their season was cut short by the coronavirus.

Seth Johnston and Joe Clarke are both long-time coaches on staff, alongside Head Coach Greg Dunne.  They share the recruiting process used by Brockport, and the types of players they are looking for in their program.  They also stress the importance of unstructured play during childhood, and the importance of becoming a well-rounded athlete versus specializing in one sport while growing up.  This is a great episode for students looking to play a sport in college, parents looking for help on guiding their kids in sports, and fellow coaches at any level looking to gain some insight on some of the behind the scenes works of an excellent program.

  • Are You Fit? with Carl Paoli | Episode 6

Carl Paoli has been at the forefront of the movement scene for decades.  His career started as an accomplished gymnast in Spain, then transitioned to California where he started GymnasticsWod, and finally moved to Freestyle Connection and Lifestyle Design.  I've been a big fan of Carl's for years, ever since I started trying to figure out how to do a handstand pushup without killing myself.  He is an excellent teacher, philosophical thinker, and a humble human being looking to form deep connections with everyone he meets.  We spent a lot of time talking about the real purpose of fitness and movement, and how it can be applied in kids' lives.  Enjoy the show and please subscribe and share it with others if we've earned it!  Thank you!

  • The World's Best Kindergarten with Takaharu and Yui Tezuka | Episode 5

I had such an awesome conversation with Takaharu and Yui, and you can easily get a feel for the passion they have for what they do and trying to create the best environment possible for kids.  They give us the 'why' behind many of the design elements of Fuji Kindergarten that I hadn't heard before, and I believe we can use many of those same principles in schools around the world, no matter the design.

I hope you enjoy listening this episode as much as I did, and if we have earned it, please consider subscribing and giving us a 5 star review!  Thank you!

    Bio:
Takaharu and Yui Tezuka have extensive experience designing spaces for children, such as Fuji Kindergarten, which was named the best school in the world by OECD(Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) and UNESCO. They recently received the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture from UNESCO. Takaharu`s TED Talk recorded 7th in the world for the number of views in 2015.  While their activity is based on architectural design, they hold lectures all over the world, receiving offers from OECD. Their theory on children`s environment is published as the "Yellowbook" from Harvard University. ( Learn more at http://www.tezuka-arch.com/)

  • Move Like Finland with Joonas Niemi | Episode 3

Joonas Niemi is the Project Manager for the Schools on the Move project in Finland.  The objective of the program is to increase physical activity in schools across the country, and it is now being implemented in more than 90% of Finnish schools.  Finland is widely regarded as having one of the best education systems in the world, and I believe the way they prioritize movement and play is a key factor in that success.

Joonas explains to us the ways they have been trying to increase physical activity not just in school, but during their transportation to and from school.  He explains how their recess periods are run, with students at the core of the experience, and how the teaching profession is viewed in Finland.
