  • Don't Come for My Black Card - It Cannot be Revoked
Episode 19: Have you ever played the game Black card Revoked? It basically celebrates popular American Black culture. Well, as you may know, there are many different Black experiences in America and not everyone had the same pop culture exposure growing up. Which brings us to today's episode with MProper Mimi host Mimi Jacks and Kristal Adams co-host of the Black Card Rehab podcast. Listen as we chat about some of our Black card experiences and stories of how it feels sometimes to be left out of cultural references. We are learning though! And it's fun to relive some of our hilarious memories together. No one should feel like their Black experience isn't Black enough and we are comfortable knowing our Black cards cannot be revoked. • Black Women's Equal Pay Day - How to negotiate salary and save your monies!
Episode 18: In honor of Black Women's Equal Pay Day Mimi Jacks was joined by guest Kelle Rozell, Marketing Director at ABC News to discuss salary negotiations and finances. With Black women earning roughly $0.62 per $1 that white non-hispanic men made in 2019, August 13, 2020 was how long they would need to work to catch up to that equal salary. What are some ways that we can advocate for ourselves to negotiate for fair pay? And how can we continue to save and secure our finances once we are there? Listen as Mimi and Kelle share some tips that they have come across and experienced. Remember, when one of us wins, we all win!
Be sure to listen and follow MProper Mimi everywhere you listen to you favorite podcasts! Feel free to follow Kelle on Twitter @Kelle or IG @k_rozell to see what else she is up to. • Writing to Strengthen Your Voice and Preserve your Memories
Episode 16: Do you remember writing essays and correcting grammar in school? How did that make you feel? MProper Mimi sits down to chat with writer and educator Yolande Jackson about the benefits to taking time out to write down your feelings and new ways to express yourself. In addition to writing Rocko's Big Launch and The Devine Cookbook, Yolande also teaches writing classes. In an effort to make writing more social and appealing to adults, she also hosts Wine Down and Write, a prompted writing class with different themes and a virtual sharing of a different wine each week.
I don't want you to think that Mimi pairs wine with all of her activities! We used our time together talking about the importance of everyday people writing their stories during the racial and social injustices that we are all surrounded by. Documenting our experiences for society and our families is just as important as using writing as a form of self care and mental wellness.
Be sure to listen and share this episode with others that can use a way to explore the power in using their words to express themselves! Follow Yolande on social media and pick up a copy of her award winning book self-published book,  Rocko's Big Launch,  a story about a young boy who wants to be a rocket scientist! https://www.yolandeclarkjackson.com/rocko-rocket IG: @Winedownandwrite
Other books we mentioned in this episode are listed below:
LIT: A Memoir by Mary Karr

  • Sip From Your Couch - Black Women in Wine
Episode 15: Ah the world of wine is so vast! For many of us, when it comes to buying a bottle of wine, it's hit or miss and we might purchase based on the pretty label or a recommendation from someone else. MProper Mimi teamed up with Chef Keesha O'Galdez, founder and owner of The Gourmet Diva Inc. from our very first episode and Sommelier and wine educator Lea Faith Williams, founder of Let's Talk Wine to host a virtual wine tasting. Our ladies extraordinaire  walked us through the process of how to pair and taste wine and find what we like about the wine we are drinking!
We focused on women in wine, particularly Black women in the wine industry for our wine recommendations. What we found was that it was difficult for some people to find wine in their local stores from the following Black owned wineries and winemakers: Brown Estate, McBride Sisters, Theopolis Vineyards, Stuyvesant Champagne and Aslina Wines. Whether it's due to demographics or distribution, you can ask your local store to order these and other Black owned wines for your tasting pleasure or go right to the source and order direct!
We invited Paula Harrell, from P. Harrell Wines to join us afterwards for an intimate conversation about Black Women in wine and what some of their experiences have been in the wine industry.  Mimi talked with Lea, Keesha and Paula about what first sparked their interest in wine, to various challenges and accomplishments they have achieved. We hope this episode helps to open the world of wine to women and empower them to identify what they like to drink and why. As always, we want to encourage supporting Black businesses and women in business as well.
Listen and share MProper Mimi with other Black women and anyone who is passionate about conversations that empower women everywhere! Email Mimi with questions or comments! [email protected] Co-produced with Cyren Young.
