It’s their first foursome! On the podcast of course. On this episode, Kim and Darren joined forces with their friends and fellow entrepreneurs Nikki and Steph. You’re going to love this conversation! Nikki and Steph run a business called Dog Jogs. Hear how they met and how the idea of Dog Jogs started. Like many business owners they were both working full time and Steph says she recognized a need for a dog jogging service. She knew the benefit of exercise for her dog when she worked long shifts so she figured that there were likely others had the same need. Find out why dog jogging (instead of walking) was the focus. What they found out was that dog owners with high-energy dogs loved the idea. Don’t miss the end when they answer four questions that provide more insight into who they are and how they manage it all so well.   We definitely walk every day, one of those walks is to wake up and brain break and yeah our evening walk is “let’s talk about work” and then when we get home we don’t’ have to talk about work anymore, it’s the end of the work day. Nik and Steph About Nik and StephYou probably have a friend (or two) who can’t walk past a dog without admiring them and then talking about them for the next block or two — Nikki and Steph are those people!  Nikki grew up with a family dog and always wanted one of her own. When she rescued Koda she was looking for a running buddy and a friendly companion, but she got way more than she signed up for. Koda had previously been adopted and returned at least three times before he found Nikki. He came to her with some intense separation anxiety, and she found exercise to be her most valuable tool in keeping Koda calm and comfortable.While Steph never really had pets growing up due to the allergies of family members, she was always loving  on friends'/neighbour's pets when she had the chance. She actually got her first pet-sitting gig when she was in elementary school, caring for a neighbour's pup while they were at work. These and other combined experiences inspired Nikki and Steph to start Dog Jogs! Business and entrepreneurship is not always easy. Mix in family on top of that, and things can get intense. What do you do then? That’s what Kim and Darren are discussing on today’s episode. When family members are involved in business disagreements, everyone involved will say that family is more important than money. It’s true for Kim and Darren. It doesn’t mean that people will always act that way. A couple of weeks ago, a family member made accusations which led to miscommunications. People were making up things, without asking questions or looking for an explanation over accusations. Darren shares that it was surprising and hurtful because it ended up creating a legal issue. Saying “it’s not personal it’s business” didn’t help. Darren said “When it’s family, it’s never just business. It’s personal. Here’s what they discuss: ·        How to separate business and personal and know the difference.·        Losing perspective when you are always focused and working in the business. ·        Intentions matter. Are people acting from a malicious place? Are they fearful? Kim shares how the mental aspect of knowing that people hold negative opinions takes a toll. It’s hard when people in the family share a negative story. How do you repair those relationships especially when it’s family? How do you have empathy for their feelings while protecting your own? At the end of the day, we’re all humans with feelings and emotions. There’s a desire to mend fences and rebuild trust. Darren wants to take one step at a time. He realized that “people don’t fail, systems do.” He tossed and turned until the answer showed up. That’s the only way to develop a team, and a business that can support the lifestyle they (we) want.
