  • 1287 Robert K. Elder, author, Hidden Hemingway, joins us on Mr. Media!
Today's Guest: Robert K. Elder, author, Hidden Hemingway: Inside the Ernest Hemingway Archives of Oak Park   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Robert K. Elder by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of bull fighters who think this show is already too much talk and not enough action… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Hidden Hemingway by Robert K. Elder. Order your copy by clicking on the book cover above! If you’ve ever been to one of the Disney theme parks, you know that a “Hidden Mickey” refers to sightings of Mickey Mouse in unexpected places. For example, you can find “classic” Mickey locks hanging on the cabinets behind Captain Jack Sparrow in the treasure room to the left of your boat on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World, according to the website HiddenMickeyGuy.com. That said, if you come to my guest Robert K. Elder’s new book, Hidden Hemingway: Inside the Ernest Hemingway Archives of Oak Park, thinking it’s that kind of story, you’ll be disappointed. (Note to the author: Got a great idea for a sequel…) Hidden Hemingway is, instead, a deep dive into what is apparently an endless collection of Hemingway family documents, souvenirs, letters and ephemera dating back decades. Elder – along with co-authors Aaron Vetch and Mark Cirino – have sorted through stacks of Hemingwayana to share everything from baby pictures and high school memorabilia to Papa’s handwritten letters to his own papa and his membership card from the Metrtopolitan Museum of Art. Even if you’ve read his novels and/or Carlos Baker’s exhaustive biography, there is plenty to fascinate any Hemingway fan here.   The Party Authority in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland!

  • 1286 Louie Cronin, novelist, Everyone Loves You Back, "Car Talk" producer, joins us on Mr. Media!
Today's Guest: Louie Cronin, novelist, "Everyone Loves You Back," former radio producer, "Car Talk"   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Louie Cronin by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of real radio veterans who can’t believe anything categorized as a podcast ever gained traction in the media… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Everyone Loves You Back by Louie Cronin. Order your copy today by clicking on the book cover above! Bob Boland, at middle age, is a mess. Fortunately for him, the life-long bachelor and radio station engineer has hit a sweet spot where every woman he’s been meeting lately wants to fix him and make him all better. His co-worker, Irene, for example. And his neighbor, Leonie. LOUIE CRONIN podcast excerpt: "Tom Magliozzi was very outgoing and used to come and talk to me and joke and laugh. We were friends before I started working for them on 'Car Talk.' I got to know Ray more slowly because he was quiet and more the straight man. But he was every bit as smart and funny as Tom." But Bob is just shuffling through life at this point, indecisive, indifferent, f-able but ultimately ineffable. Bob is at the core of Louie Cronin’s first novel, the Cambridge, Massachsetts-set story, Everyone Loves You Back. It’s a charming, easy read and I daresay we all probably have a Bob Boland in our lives. Making Everyone ever more interesting is its workplace setting: an FM radio station in the throes of conversion from jazz to an all-news format. That’s particularly compelling because the author spent 10 years as the producer of “Car Talk” the long-running NPR show host by Tom and Ray Magliozzi. More recently, she is a technical director for PRI’s “The World.” She must have been taking a lot of notes over the years! LOUIE CRONIN podcast excerpt: "I'm in a writing group and I read the book to them, chapter by chapter, as I wrote it. I often had times when the men in the group said, 'No, no! He wouldn't care about what the guys had on! He would be thinking more like, 'Who could take who in a fight?' They corrected me as I went along." Key interview moments: • 5:05 First-time novelist Louie Cronin talks about how her writing group helped her get the inner voice of the book's male lead character correctly; • 16:10 As a long-time producer for public radio's "Car Talk with Tom and Ray Magliozzi," Cronin was asked to make a Sophie's Choice between the brothers; • 25:10 That time her writing coach told her that if she was going to write literary fiction, she better not quit her day job. I came out of my tech support job, getting some lunch, and I saw him walking on the street. I went, 'Oh, my God -- Steve Harvey!' I said to him, 'I just started doing comedy!' • 1284 Ina-Alice Kopp, actress, Flytrap
Today's Guest: Ina-Alice Kopp, actress, Flytrap Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of aliens – and not the kind that any dumb wall will ever keep out… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Flytrap starring Jeremy Crutchley, Ina-Alice Kopp, Jonah Blechman. Order your copy today by clicking on the movie poster above! Flytrap is the kind of fantasy that would scare the crap out of Donald Trump – what if there are aliens living among us and they’re from much farther away than Mexico or even Syria? And what if they don’t want our jobs or money? What if they’re really after our sperm? INA-ALICE KOPP podcast excerpt: "Even though my character appears to be very simple-minded -- and very mechanical at times -- I do feel that, in the end, we're telling a very touching, human love story." I don’t want to give away too much but this indie, erotic sci-fi thriller does more with a non-existent special effects budget than many Hollywood films can do with a sky-high pile of cash. Flytrap stars British actor Jeremy Crutchley as “Pond, James Pond,” Austrian actress Ina-Alice Kopp as “Mary Ann,” and American actor Jonah Blechman as “Gilligan.” (You read those character names right; there are sexy bits of fun all over this one.) Joining me today from her native Austria is Ina-Alice Kopp, whose character is Stepford Wife-like in her total devotion to getting laid. Which sounds like fun at first for James, but you know what they say about too much of a good thing… INA-ALICE KOPP podcast excerpt: "As actors, we like to feel things are natural, that we don't have to pretend. That's what for both of us." Key interview moments: • 5:10 Actress Ina-Alice Kopp explains that even though her character, Mary Ann, seems focused only on sexual reproduction at the start of Flytrap, she does evolve by the end; • 15:00 Kopp says she and her love interest in the film, played by actor Jeremy Crutchley didn't feel like they were pretending on screen; • 23:45 How does an Austrian-born actress becoming big in China? Hint: it doesn't hurt to speak seven languages well. • 898 Jackie Collins, novelist, Goddess of Vengeance, joins us on Mr. Media!
Today's Guest: Jackie Collins, novelist, Goddess of Vengeance Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of chick lit novelists who aren’t talented enough to dust Jackie Collins’ stack of writing pads… in the NEW new media capital of the world, St. Petersburg, Florida! Order Goddess of Vengeance by clicking on the book cover above! The first time Jackie Collins was a guest on Mr. Media, I have to admit I was a little nervous. This is a novelist who has sold about 4 billion copies of her books and has been producing quality, popular work since I was in short pants. Would she hang up the minute the first dumbass remark came out of my mouth? JACKIE COLLINS audio excerpt: "I'm not that explicit but I'm explicit enough." Best-selling novelist Jackie Collins And when I inevitably stumbled over the title of her then current book, Poor Little Bitch Girl, would she put me in my place with a withering glance so toxic I could feel it through the phone line? Nope. She was a doll. I remember finishing that interview and feeling like that was a keeper. Miss Collins was charming, effervescent and, for struggling and successful writers alike to hear, quite the inspiration. I’m quite eager to spend the next 30 minutes with her to hear about her new book, Goddess of Vengeance, which continues the adventures of Lucky Santangelo and her supporting cast. I’m also hopeful we’ll hear more about her craft and how the autobiography is coming. I might even ask what her actor sister Joan is up to this time. Or I might not.
