  • 1278 Amy Rose, country singer, Put A Lime In It, joins us on Mr. Media
Today's Guest: Amy Rose, country singer, "Put A Lime In It," "Show Up Naked and Bring Beer," "Party Like A Redneck (Redneck Reunion)" Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of Grand Ol’ Opry fans sipping complimentary Seagram's Escapes Bahama Mamas with a lime in it… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! [caption id="attachment_14027" align="alignright" width="300"] Amy Rose, "Put A Lime In It" Amy Rose may not be the only country music singer to sing songs about drinking and partying, but she’s certainly staking her rising career on them! The first time she was on Mr. Media, in 2012, it was to promote and sing “Party Like A Redneck (Redneck Reunion).” AMY ROSE podcast excerpt: "People just like to relate to songs about beer, let’s face it! Everybody likes beer. Everybody likes beer! The songs are working!" You can LISTEN to this interview with country singer AMY ROSE by clicking the audio player above! In 2015, she was here commanding us all to “Show Up Naked and Bring Beer”! This time, our favorite performer in all of North America has a new drinking anthem, “Put A Lime In It”! It is her fastest rising single to date and when you hear her sing it here live, you’ll know why. In fact, she will be performing two songs today with guitarist Chris Taggart, so stick around for a little lime and “One Of These Days.” AMY ROSE podcast excerpt: "We do 'Pieces of My Heart' by Janis Joplin in our live show and we do 'Me and Bobby McGee. Everybody loves Janis Joplin." Oh, PS – Amy promised to sponsor my Canadian citizenship if Donald Trump is elected president of the United States. I don’t think I asked, but she was sweet enough to offer! Key interview moments: • 3:53 Country singer Amy Rose talks about her wildly growing success with songs about beer, partying and rednecks; • 17:50 She reveals that her live shows include two Janis Joplin covers, “Me and Bobby McGee” and “Piece of My Heart." • 406 Barbara Eden, star, "I Dream of Jeannie," joins us on Mr. Media
Today's Guest: Barbara Eden, star, 'I Dream of Jeannie,' 'Harper Valley PTA Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of former NASA astronauts—male and female—who signed up for space travel because it seemed like the best way to meet Barbara Eden… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Order Jeannie Out of the Bottle by Barbara Eden, available from Amazon.com, by clicking on the book cover above! In a moment, I’m going to be talking to Jeannie. The character who bedeviled Dr. Alfred Bellows. The innocently seductive soul who tamed bachelor-for-life Major Anthony Nelson. And the absolutely stunning, real-life woman who helped a lot of young men meet puberty head on. Raquel Welch last fall, Barbara Eden today – my inner teen wants to know what took so long! BARBARA EDEN audio excerpt: "The minute I Dream of Jeannie was, 'Honey, I'm home,' and the little housewife thing, it was over. I think it was a mistake." You can LISTEN to this interview with actress BARBARA EDEN, star of I DREAM OF JEANNIE, by clicking the audio player above! This really is a treat; I watched “I Dream of Jeannie” with my parents when it was still on network TV, then re-watched the episodes a few hundred more times over the ensuing decades. And there came the day when I rediscovered it with my daughter, Rachel, introducing a new generation to the wonders of bottled blondes with magical powers and evil twin sisters. Order 'I Dream of Jeannie: The Complete Series Boxset,' available from Amazon.com by clicking on the DVD box above! Barbara is here today because she recently published her autobiography, Jeannie Out of The Bottle. She probably doesn’t know this, but two previous Mr. Media interviews presaged her appearance. The first was with Larry Thomas, best known for playing the Soup Nazi on “Seinfeld.” A few years back he talked about what a wonderful actress and human being Barbara was when they appeared together doing live theater. Second was when I interviewed her proud niece, Katharine Fugate, the creator of the Lifetime network show, “Army Wives.” Katharine said during that show, “You should have my Aunt Barbara as a guest.” As you wish, Mistress. • 1270 Sheaun McKinney, actor, Vice Principals, HBO, joins us on Mr. Media
In the first couple episodes of the new HBO sitcom, “Vice Principals,” actor Sheaun McKinney’s moments on screen are short, but sweet. Oh, and funny. Very, very funny. SHEAUN McKINNEY podcast excerpt: "My character on ‘Vice Principals,’ Dayshawn, is the voice of reason for Danny McBride’s character. Dayshawn’s allegiance is always to Danny. I agree with his core principals, but I don’t agree with his tactics. Dayshawn kreeps it 100% with him."  You can LISTEN to this interview with actor SHEAUN McKINNEY, co-star of VICE PRINCIPALS, by clicking the audio player above! McKinney plays the cleverly named “Deshaun,” a cafeteria worker at North Jackson High School who is upbeat, professional, and may be the only one on the school’s staff who sees its two vice principals, played by Danny McBride and Walton Goggins, for the assholes they are. It’s the kind of role where McKinney’s character may represent the audience watching the show, raising an eyebrow or cocking his head askew at the mayhem the veeps get into. The show airs Sundays on HBO at 10:30 p.m. SHEAUN McKINNEY podcast excerpt: "I came back to L.A. for what I thought would be four or five days. My friend said, 'Let's go to church.' I'm always game; my faith is very important to my life. A guest speaker gave a sermon. He kept saying, 'It's time for you to make a move. It's time for you to ACT on your faith.' I get that you can listen to any sermon and think, 'Oh, my God, Jesus is really talking to me!' But certain things stuck out."  For me, it’s really cool to see McKinney back in action. He made his first appearance on Mr. Media back in late 2007 as the star of an indie hip-hop film, Nemesis – later re-released as Know Thy Enemy. I’m guessing “Vice Principals” is the big break he’s been waiting a decade for. Key interview moments: • 4:00 Sheaun McKinney, co-star of the new HBO sitcom “Vice Principals” with Danny McBride and Walton Goggins, tells how a chance visit to an LA church — and the literal earthquake that followed — changed his career; • 8:40 This is the story of how not getting a part in WGN’s “Manhattan” led to bigger and better things; • 14:56 McKinney breaks down his character’s importance to Danny McBride’s character. • 412 James Dashner, author, The Maze Runner, joins us on Mr. Media
Today's Guest: Novelist James Dashner, author of The Maze Runner trilogy of young adults fiction.     Order 'The Maze Runner' by James Dashner from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! Recommendations are worth what you pay for them, so I don’t always accept them at face value. But the same literary agent who turned me on to young adult novelist Sara Zarr two years ago thought I’d also enjoy James Dashner’s new YA book, The Maze Runner, enough that he sent me a copy without first asking. And Michael—who, in the interests of full disclosure, represents all three of us—even though there is hardly a bit of similarity between the work of these two authors, you read me pretty well so feel free to recommend something else. JAMES DASHNER audio excerpt: "The words in The Maze Runner are never used exactly as replacements for swear words. Their main intent was to give their dialogue a futuristic flavor and that they've been isolated and developed some words on their own."  You can LISTEN to this interview with JAMES DASHNER, writer of THE MAZE RUNNER, by clicking the audio player above! Young adult novelist James Dashner Order 'The Scorch Trials' (Maze Runner, Book 2) by James Dashner, available from Amazon.com by clicking on the book cover above! The Maze Runner is the kind of book that teens and youthful readers of all ages in search of an appropriate follow-up to the adventures of Harry Potter will no doubt enjoy. It takes place in a fantastical, impossible place, develops a language of its own, and features characters you will instantly love—and hate. (Sorry, Gally.) This is the first book in a trilogy from Dashner, who you may already know as author of the 13th Reality series. • 1276 Lisa Roth, co-founder, Rockabye Baby Music, joins us on Mr. Media!
Today's Guest: Lisa Roth, co-creator, creative director, Rockabye Baby Music   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Lisa Roth by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of five-year-old musicians whose parents think they might be starting a little too late in the biz to ever be successful… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! The first rock ‘n’ roll my infant son heard almost 20 years ago was AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell.” It was the first time we were alone in the minivan – Charlie was maybe a week old – and I was dying to hear some familiar tunes. I also wanted my kid to get acclimated to my taste in music. I remember wishing there were songs that I could listen to over and over again with him that wouldn’t make me unconscious. Today’s parents have that opportunity. LISA ROTH podcast excerpt: "We do it with great care, great pride, from the sound of the recording to the artwork. It's something the original artists can be proud of. We're not making fun; we're huge fans." You can LISTEN to this interview with LISA ROTH, creative director of ROCKABYE BABY MUSIC, by clicking the audio player above! Lisa Roth’s company, Rockabye Baby, takes hits we all know and loves and painstakingly adapts them for the tender ears of newborns and infants. It’s elevator music for the next generation whatever they might be collectively called. There are 76 different Rockabye Baby albums; more than 1.8 million have been sold to date, including the songs of The Beatles, Pearl Jam, David Bowie, and Guns n Roses. The latest is a collection of Adele’s greatest hits, including “Rolling in the Deep.” Can’t stand another round of “John Jacob Jingleheimer Smith”? Try putting your newborn to sleep with “Fortunate Son” by Creedence Clearwater Revival. And you haven’t lived until you’ve heard Aerosmith’s “Dude (Looks Like a Lady)” played, not with guitars or drums but mellotrons, vibraphones and bells. Not a fan of bayou or Boston rock stars? How about a little Taylor Swift melody, in which the usual pop instruments on “Shake It Off” are replaced by xylophones and bells? LISA ROTH podcast excerpt: "He's David to me. Never 'Dave'; never 'David Lee.' 'David Lee' -- that would be our mother calling him. He was a huge personality and a handful in the household growing up. When he became famous, it was exciting. They broke the mold after my brother. I have never encountered anyone like him in my life" I haven’t lost my mind, folks. I’m talking about the growing catalogue of “Rockabye Baby” albums in which classic rock and modern pop anthems that mom and dad have loved for a lifetime have been adapted for their infants. Even Tipper Gore might approve. Who is Lisa Roth? Here’s a hint; her brother once replaced Howard Stern. No? Okay, here’s another: he’s the voice – and personality – of a little California band you may have heard of called Van Halen. Key interview moments: • 6:30 Lisa Roth, co-creator and creative director of Rockabye Baby Music, talks about the care that is put into converting pop, rock, metal and hip-hop tunes into soothing lullabies for babies; • 13:50 Roth reveals that Aerosmith's "Dude Looks Like a Lady" is one of her favorite conversions and discusses the evolution of baby music; • 19:08 Ever wondered what it might be like to grow up with Van Halen lead singer David Lee Roth as your older brother?
