  • My night with Curt Smith and Tears For Fears! INTERVIEW
    FROM 2011: Here’s a Tears for Fears story I guarantee you haven’t heard before:

    I was the pop music critic for the St. Petersburg Times Alumni (now the Tampa Bay Times) in 1985, assigned to review a Tears For Fears concert.

    I rushed back to the paper’s Clearwater bureau that night to file my story. Waiting for it in downtown St. Petersburg was the late night editor, Christine Holsten. I filed my story and waited for her to read it and answer any questions she might have.

    But her major question wasn’t about my story; it was about the photo credit. The photographer identified his picture as Roland Orzabal on the left, Curt Smith on the right. But Christine wasn’t convinced. I said the photographer had it correct, but she had the final call and switched the ID in the caption.

    It was probably the last time I was right about anything in our relationship, but I was right; she was wrong. A horde of TFF fans called in the next day to say how stupid I was for getting it wrong, of course. (They weren’t happy about being referred to as “teeny-boppers,” either!)

    That was one of the first real moments that truly bound us and to this day, whenever we hear a Tears song playing, we can’t help but stop and fondly reminisce about that night. We’ve now been married 22 years and counting. (Most of you know Christine better these days as Mimi Andelman, btw.)

    Which is my long way of telling you that my guest today is Tears For Fears’ Curt Smith, who has released a new holiday single, “This is Christmas,” and will be playing several solo gigs in Los Angeles in 2011 and will rejoin Roland Orzabal for a Tears For Fears tour of South America and the U.S. West Coast.

  • Mike Edison, a complete disappointment? Not here! VIDEO INTERVIEW - Mr. Media Interviews by Bob Andelman
    Today's Guest: Mike Edison, author, You Are A Complete Disappointment, I Have Fun Everywhere I Go, Dirty! Dirty! Dirty!   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media® interview with Mike Edison by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of boys and girls who can look forward to a lifetime of dumbass sh!t their parents are genetically bound to say to them in the years ahead… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! In his past appearances on Mr. Media, I pretty much swooned over the arc of Mike Edison’s career as a writer and editor: Editor, High Times magazine. Foreign correspondent, Hustler magazine. Paid letters writer, Penthouse magazine. MIKE EDISON podcast excerpt: "When my dad died, he was pretty abusive and a bully, to me. But when he died, I cried a lot. Of course I did, like any son would when their dad died. I had an odd sort of closure because his last words to me were, 'You are a complete disappointment.' And he was just getting started." You can LISTEN to this interview with writer MIKE EDISON, author of YOU ARE A COMPLETE DISAPPOINTMENT, by clicking the audio player above! Contributor, the Huffington Post, Daily Beast, New York Observer, Spin, Interview, and the New York Press. Author, I Have Fun Everywhere I Go and Dirty! Dirty! Dirty! Screw the guy in the Dos Equis commercials; for my money, Mike Edison is the most interesting man in world. In his third and – I suspect – not last memoir, You Are A Complete Disappointment: A Triumphant Memoir of Failed Expectations, we learn how much childhood and adult grief Edison has overcome in his life at the hands of a disinterested mother and a criminally, emotionally abusive father. MIKE EDISON podcast excerpt: "No matter how successful you are, no matter how much money you make, you cannot improve on meatball pizza and root beer and Elton John on the jukebox! My father never got that. He didn't know how to live in the moment." The title comes from the last statement the senior Edison said on his deathbed, in Arizona, to his son. The good news is that the man is no longer walking the earth. The bad news, as Edison writes on page 117, is that he is still only a phone call away: … the fact that, years later, his voice is still on the outgoing voice-mail message on my step-mother’s house phone does strike me as somewhat ghoulish. I can imagine it must be traumatic to erase it, but imagine how people feel hearing it? When I want to call his wife to check in – and I do – I always call her cell phone. I can’t handle the old man telling me to leave a message – or do anything, for that matter – from beyond the grave. Key interview moments: • 2:45 Mike Edison explains the title to his book, his finally "inspiration" from an abusive dad; • 18:15 Memories of eating meatball pizza at the White Birch Inn in Metuchen, New Jersey; • 35:30 Parents, you know those dirty books you think the kids don't know about on your nightstand? You're wrong. "I went on to become a pornographer!" Edison says. "I went to write Penthouse letters!" • Susan Silverman brings humor, faith to adoption! VIDEO INTERVIEW - Mr. Media Interviews by Bob Andelman
    Today's Guest: Susan Silverman, rabbi, international adoption activist, author, Casting Lots: Creating a Family in a Beautiful Broken World   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Rabbi Susan Silverman by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of full-grown adults who would like a shot at being adopted by the Silverman clan… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Rabbi Susan Silverman is a bit of an alarmist. Don’t believe me? Just read her book. From the Prologue: Page xi: “At recess, I’d puposely get an out in kickball in exchange for my parents still being alive when the 3 p.m. bell rang and the school day was over.” SUSAN SILVERMAN podcast excerpt: "People are more likely to adopt if they feel their community has their back. I would say to people, create a situation in which you can adopt. If you have that in your heart and that capacity in your life, take the risk!" You can LISTEN to this interview with RABBI SUSAN SILVERMAN, author of CASTING LOTS: CREATING A FAMILY IN A BEAUTIFUL, BROKEN WORLD, by clicking the audio player above! And on Page 90, as a grown-ass married woman and mother: “Once, upon hearing of a crash in Russia, I actually figured out how (my husband) could have ended up on that flight, a scenario that included a wrong gate and an absentminded ticketing agent. I had recently spent half the night dialing and re-dialing the front desk of his hotel, asking the same clerk to put me through to his room. I had left messages, but what if he didn’t check them? What if the red light on the hotel-room phone was out? What if he were lying dead in the gutter RIGHT NOW? “…God created the world through poetic speech. I patrolled mine through vigilant bitchiness.” Don’t misunderstand – I’m not making fun of Susan. (Okay, maybe a little. I am married; I know the drill.) As the first-born child of Beth Ann and Donald Silverman, Susan experienced a horrific trauma: her three-month-old baby brother died in his crib while her parents were on a short vacation and the baby was being cared for by Donald’s parents. That 1964 incident—at least from my reading of Susan’s new book, Casting Lots: Creating a Family in a Beautiful, Broken World – colored everything that has followed in her life, from being ordained to raising a family of five, becoming an adoption activist, and relocating from Boston to Jerusalem. SUSAN SILVERMAN podcast excerpt: "My brother, Jeffrey Michael, was a baby when he died-- I don't even remember him. It wasn't until I was an adult and in therapy, talking this intense separation anxiety i have. I mentioned that I had a brother who died when I was two. My therapist said, 'WHAT?' I had been in therapy for three years already. She said, 'Susan, wake up and smell the coffee.' It helped shift things a lot. As did Zoloft." In Casting Lots, Susan tells her story, warts, four-letter words and all, and makes her case for easing restrictions on international adoptions. By the way, I first became interested in Susan last summer when I heard the audiobook edition of her sister Sarah’s book, The Bedwetter, in which the comedian—perhaps best known for her music video, “F*@#ing Matt Damon” and support of candidates Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders—talks in awe about her big sister, the rabbi and mother. Key interview moments: • 3:40 Rabbi Susan Silverman talks about the personal breakthrough in therapy that helped her cope with her intense, lifelong separation anxiety; • 13:10 She offers constructive advice to families considering adoption; • 26:19 Silverman addresses her frustration with what she sees as a shift among aid organizations such as Save the Children and UNICEF away from private adoption and more focused on warehousing orphaned children around the world.

  • Movie Freak Owen Gleiberman wants a good scare! INTERVIEW
    OWEN GLEIBERMAN podcast excerpt: "When I first saw 'Spotlight,' I was, 'Yeah, this is great! It's feeding my nostalgia for 'All The President's Men'! It's about when newspapers mattered!' It touched all of my key passion points. But the more I thought about it, I thought it was a good move, but it wasn't great. And I did watch it a second time; if anything, it looked a little less good. The major characters could have been developed more; it's not All The President's Men."

    Key interview moments:

    • 8:30 Owen Gleiberman talks about the impact of scary, horrific movies on the souls of 12-year-old children (himself included);

    • 29:30 Legendary film critic Pauline Kael was an early supporter of Gleiberman's -- she recommended him for the job at 'Entertainment Weekly' -- but she was not an enduring friend to those who disagreed with her film criticism;

    • 54:00 "Spotlight" was a good movie, he says, but it didn't hold up upon repeat viewing.

  • Frank Morsani revs Tampa Bay’s philanthropic engine! PODCAST INTERVIEW - Mr. Media Interviews by Bob Andelman
    Today's Guest: Frank Morsani, businessman, philanthropist, author, To Be Frank: Building the American Dream in Business and Life   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Frank Morsani by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of automobile dealers who still pine for the return of Joe Isuzu… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Frank Morsani is one of the finest men, bar none, with whom I’ve ever had the pleasure to spend time. That’s noteworthy because I got to know the Tampa Bay auto dealer at one of the lowest points in his business career, yet he always held his head high. Somewhere around 1989, I started working on my first nonfiction book, Stadium For Rent, the story of Tampa Bay’s decades-long – and enormously frustrating – quest for a Major League Baseball team. FRANK MORSANI podcast excerpt: “I think it’s pathetic (that Donald Trump is the GOP standard bearer). It’s a tragedy on our system." You can LISTEN to this interview with Tampa automobile dealer and philanthropist FRANK MORSANI, author of TO BE FRANK, by clicking the audio player above! Many local business leaders had risen up and been cut to pieces by the ongoing, Quixotic mission, none more memorably than Frank Morsani. He committed and lost millions of dollars trying to convince a string of existing baseball teams to relocate to Tampa – and later, St. Petersburg – to no avail. When MLB announced, in 1993, that it would add two expansion franchises, he seemed a shoe-in. He wasn’t. But you know what made it all the worse? Frank Morsani wasn’t then – and certainly isn’t now – a baseball fan. He was just a kid from Oklahoma who had found a home in Tampa, Florida, a community that welcomed him – loved him, frankly – and if baseball was what his adopted neighbors wanted, he wanted to help them get it. For a lot of people the Morsani story began and ended with car dealerships and baseball. FRANK MORSANI podcast excerpt: "Unfortunately, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has taken a lot of positions that I would have problems with. They've been aggressive; I believe in being aggressive. But I think they have gotten away from some of the basics that were important to me (when I was Chairman of the Board). In our whole nation, these extremists on both sides are not in our best interests." But this kind and gentle soul – and his wife of more than half a century, Carol – have meant so much more to their community, thanks to philanthropic efforts that have included giving millions to the University of South Florida, University of Tampa, Tampa’s Straz Center for the Performing Arts, and the Dali Museum. Most recently, the Morsanis gave $20 million to USF for construction of the Morsani College of Medicine soon to rise in downtown Tampa. Morsani – with the help of my friend Dave Scheiber – just published his memoir, To Be Frank: Building the American Dream in Business and Life. It is my great pleasure to help introduce the man and his message to a new audience. Key interview moments: • 8:25 Frank Morsani talks about how he picked himself up following his failure to land a Major League Baseball relocation or expansion franchise for the Tampa Bay area in the 1990s; • 13:55 s a former Chairman of the Board of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Morsani admits he has problems with many of the organization’s current political stances; • 15:45 And as a lifelong Republican, Morsani calls the party’s turn to Donald Trump as its presidential nominee as “pathetic” and “a tragedy." • For The Captain and Tennille, one’s love wasn’t enough! VIDEO INTERVIEW - Mr. Media Interviews by Bob Andelman
    Today's Guest: Toni Tennille, singer, The Captain and Tennille, author, Toni Tennille: A Memoir   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Toni Tennille by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of pop stars who won’t believe that drug and alcohol abuse is not at the core of what went wrong with The Captain and Tennile… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Toni Tennille: A Memoir is an okay title for the Alabama native’s life story, but once you read it to the end, you might agree with me that “Toni Tennille: Happy At Last” is more fitting. I cannot deny that I had low expectations as I began reading the autobiography of this singer who I always adored as a teen and held on to over the decades as a guilty pop pleasure. The glamour, the celebrity friends, parties, etc. – ho-hum, we’ve certainly heard it all before. But trust me, you haven’t heard this story. TONI TENNILLE podcast excerpt: "I cannot blame Daryl for the kind of man he is. He was raised quite differently from the way I was; he was raised in a family that was very dysfunctional. My dad was a binge drinker. But there was no doubt that he adored me and my sisters and that he loved my mom and my mother loved us as well.Daryl was raised in a family that had lots and lots of difficult issues. His father, Carmen Dragon, was an Academy Award-winning film scorer and symphony composer. He was 'The Maestro' -- a handsome, charismatic man. But when Daryl and I started to have some hits and Daryl's name got out there, I think (Carmen) might have been jealous of his own son. He would say say to people, 'Yeah, that's The Captain and Tennille. I'm The Admiral!' just so people knew he was bigger and better than Daryl was.” You can LISTEN to this interview with singer TONI TENNILLE, author of TONI TENNILLE: A MEMOIR, by clicking the audio player above! If, like me, you are old enough to remember The Captain and Tennille as a top of the charts recording and touring sensation, you’ll remember Toni Tennile’s soaring vocals, her Southern charm and her big as all-outdoors smile. As for The Captain – Daryl Dragon, the former keyboardist for The Beach Boys – what you’ll recall of him was that he rarely spoke while glowering at his wife and everyone else most of the rest of the time. He always wore a hat, eventually hiding behind sunglasses, too. I spent a lifetime thinking it was an act. Toni Tennille spent a lifetime wishing it was an act. TONI TENNILLE podcast excerpt: "I have to point out that it's 'Do THAT to Me One More Time.' It's not 'Do IT to Me One More Time'! That's why lyrics are important. It's 'Kiss me.' And 'Say that to me again' -- instead of what other people may think!" Turns out, The Captain was a miserable wretch of a human being and spent decades treating his wife like crap. Reading Toni Tennille: A Memoir is a soul-crushing experience; turning each page you’ll find yourself screaming, “Toni! Get away from that bastard!” But as anyone who has ever suffered emotional abuse at the hands of a spouse knows, it’s not always easy to make a clean break. I’m glad I read Toni Tennile: A Memoir; I’m even happier to know that the subject of the book is finally free. Key interview moments: • 4:40 Toni Tennille describes her rough road with former husband Daryl Dragon -- The Captain in The Captain and Tennille -- but refuses to blame him or play the victim. Instead she blames his father, Academy Award-winning composer Carmen Dragon; • 23:45 Why has Toni Tennille dedicated "Muskrat Love" to former U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger at every performance still 1974?; • 37:25 Toni clears the air about the title and content of the song "Do That to Me One More Time." Today's Guest: Jen Senko, documentary filmmaker, The Brainwashing of My Dad, The Vanishing City

    JEN SENKO podcast excerpt: "Fox shouldn't have the right to call itself 'News'; it's mostly commentary."

    Key interview moments:

    • 3:05 Filmmaker Jen Senko dealt with multiple delays in getting The Brainwashing of My Dad to the silver screen, but the rise of Donald Trump, GOP political candidate, made her eventually timing perfect;

    • 12:10 Even Democrats scoffed at Hillary Clinton's mid-1990s claim of "a vast right-wing conspiracy" -- until long-time Republican operative David Brock confirmed her accusation was true;

    • 20:20 Senko questions whether Fox News Channel should be allowed to use the word "News" in its name.

  • Strange As It Seems, Gordon Zahler story is true! INTERVIEW
    Today's Guest: Chip Jacobs, author, "Strange As It Seems: The Impossible Life of Gordon Zahler," "Smogtown"

    CHIP JACOBS podcast excerpt: "Some people scoff or give me a funny eyebrow scrunched look when them my uncle did these things that he did. He looked at his injury like some people look at a skin rash and said to himself, 'Deal with it. I want to go on my boat, take flying lessons, or... What about a safari?'"

    Key interview moments:

    • 3:00 Chip Jacobs gave him biography the subtitle "The Impossible Life of Gordon Zahler" because he knew his uncle's life sounded unbelievable;

    • 19:20 Muriel Zahler, Chip's mother and Gordon's sister, recognized that her life was forever changed by Gordon's accident and the financial too it took on their family; she never forgave him but never abandoned him, either;

    • 19:20 Gordon's outsized life intersected with many celebrities thanks to his music business, creating relationships with everyone from sitcom queen Lucille Ball ("I Love Lucy") and animator Walter Lantz (creator of "Woody Woodpecker") to "B" movie director Ed Wood Jr. (Plan 9 From Outer Space).

  • Movie Freak Owen Gleiberman: Entertainment Weekly and Beyond! VIDEO INTERVIEW - Mr. Media Interviews by Bob Andelman
    Today's Guest: Owen Gleiberman, author, Movie Freak: My Life Watching Movies, film critic, BBC.com, Entertainment Weekly, Boston Phoenix   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Owen Gleiberman by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of movie fans who agree with me that The Hollywood Knights is the most underrated movie of the last 40 years and that Robert Wuhl deserves the Kennedy Honors… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! If you thought that Straight Outta Compton was an at times brutal account of the entertainment business, ready yourself for the all-out brawl that is Owen Gleiberman vs. Pauline Kael and Her Acolytes. Okay, I’m kidding. Mostly. OWEN GLEIBERMAN podcast excerpt: "As a college kid, I was intimidated to be around Pauline Kael, this writer that I admired. She had a personality that was domineering. From the moment I was first talking to her, I felt pressure to agree with her. She was incredibly insinuating. She gave you a sense that she believed completely and had a kind of contempt for what anyone else would think." You can LISTEN to this interview with former ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY film critic OWEN GLEIBERMAN, author of MOVIE FREAK: MY LIFE WATCHING MOVIES, by clicking the audio player above! Movie Freak: My Life Watching Movies is a compelling memoir of an accidental movie critic, a young man who discovered comfort in dark theaters as a boy and never left it even as an adult. What struck me about Movie Freak was the parallel between Gleiberman’s film experiences from adolescence on to high school and into college—and my own. Part of that is our similarity in age; part is having had the good luck to be mentored and steered at critical times in our early careers. As I was reading the book, I kept telling my wife, “Replace Michigan (where Gleiberman grew up) with New Jersey and University of Michigan with University of Miami and this might as well be my life through being a freshman in college.” To which my wife would shrug, roll her eyes, and return to “Top Chef.” OWEN GLEIBERMAN podcast excerpt: "When you're at a certain age, horror can certainly scare the the sh!t out of you. There are probably 12-year-olds that sneak in to see 'Saw 4' and I can't imagine what that does to them--probably something far worse than 'Rosemary's Baby' or 'The Boston Strangler' did to me. In hindsight, the films I saw at the drive-in with my parents might have been pretty extreme but there was a certain humanity to them. It was less about the gore." Gleiberman is best known to film fans as the first film critic at a little magazine named Entertainment Weekly, a position he held for more than two decades – even though he trashed Pretty Woman. Not that I loved it either, but I wasn’t in a position to influence millions, just tens. I especially loved the backstage editorial anecdotes and sniping he shares from his time at the predominant entertainment zine in the country. The book also doesn’t shy from revealing the author’s porn addiction in college, love of cocaine as a young adult, and – for many years – his inability to commit to any woman for longer than six months. By the way, you gotta respect a man who admits his job ain’t exactly tough. Key interview moments: • 8:30  Owen Gleiberman talks about the impact of scary, horrific movies on the souls of 12-year-old children (himself included); • 29:30 Legendary film critic Pauline Kael was an early supporter of Gleiberman's -- she recommended him for the job at 'Entertainment Weekly' -- but she was not an enduring friend to those who disagreed with her film criticism; • 54:00 Spotlight was a good movie, he says, but it didn't hold up upon repeat viewing.
