We were joined by Thomas C. Theiner @noclador (Twitter) on a ’40-minute' SITREP with a clear eyed view on the Ukrainian counteroffensive, 14 June 2023.

Thomas C. Theiner shared his analysis and appraisal of the force structure of the ZSU (AFU) including its brigades, the shaping, probing and teasing out of Russian reserves, the use of drones, artillery warfare, especially the precision guided ammunition and shells. We touched on partisan activity, then discussed the impact of Swiss neutrality on weapons and ammunition exports, how to deal with it (UK, Italy) and how not (Germany), as well as general matters of pro Ukrainian advocacy by the public.

Thomas reviewed again the scorched earth policies and destructive, genocidal warfare waged by Russia against Ukraine and its people. We discussed the drying out Dnipro basin and new opportunities for the AFU to cross over to outflank resp. attack Russian forces.

This time our 20/40 became a torrent of Q&A and lasted 3 hours.

In the conversation, Volodymyr shares his thoughts on the harsh realities faced by Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) and the contrasting treatment they receive compared to Russian POWs. This difference underscores the democratic values of Ukraine versus the oppressive, barbaric actions of Russia.

Volodymyr also addresses the evolution of Ukraine's military efforts and the need for international support, especially in terms of equipment and technology. He highlights and appreciates the fundraiser od @MriyaReport. Volodymyr emphasizes how critical it is for Ukraine’s defenders to have access to advanced equipment, as they are often forced to use creative methods to compensate for the lack of artillery and other resources. He reflects on the spirit of Ukrainian soldiers, many of whom come from civilian backgrounds but have volunteered to defend their country, demonstrating immense bravery and determination in the face of Russian aggression.

Mriya Report was honoured to welcome the Nigeria-based correspondent for The Daily Beast. Philip covers Sub-Saharan Africa and the Wagner Group activities in Africa since 2018. 

He reports on coups, security contracts and human rights abuses, and was recently abducted and tortured while reporting on the activities of this Russian private army. 

Philip, as an investigative journalist, draws a clear link between Russia's actions in Ukraine and its growing influence in Africa. He explains that the Wagner Group, a Russian paramilitary force, has been operating in Africa with a goal of seizing control of valuable resources. In the Central African Republic (CAR), Russian mercenaries have taken over gold and diamond mines, backing local regimes in exchange for resource access. With the ongoing conflict, some of these Wagner fighters have been pulled out of Africa to bolster Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine, showing how interconnected their activities are.

Philip believes that if Ukraine wins and weakens Russia, it could force the Kremlin to scale back its operations in Africa, creating an opening for Western nations to step in. Western countries, he points out, have largely pulled away from these regions, leaving a vacuum that Russia and China have filled. The outcome of the war in Ukraine could shift the balance, not just in Europe but across the globe, affecting Russia’s hold over both its resource extraction in Africa and its political alliances.
