What is the meaning of Christianity? What is the purpose of the life of faith? Why do we go to church? Sometimes it's good to get back to the basics. Jesus speaks two words that reorient us to the to the end goal of the Christian life - "Follow Me." To receive and respond to these words is to begin a life of discipleship. German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer provides a helpful description of discipleship. It is a "determined quest for him who is the sole object of it all, for Jesus Christ himself."(Cost of Discipleship, "Introduction"). From the call of Nathaniel in John 1, we see three different responses that a follower of Jesus might experience at various points in their faith journey:
