The story of Ananias and Sapphira is sobering and difficult to comprehend. Why would God respond so harshly to their deceitful act? Because God cares about the health and unity of his church. Their sin was like a cancer that would spread throughout the community if God didn’t remove it swiftly. Passages like this help us take God seriously. They also cause us to take our sin seriously. And most important, they lead us to take the Cross seriously.
