Sermon Notes

Awareness of the presence and activity of the Holy Spirit cultivates gratitude, worship, and spiritual hunger. The Bible tells us a lot about the ministry of the Holy Spirit. To keep in step with the Spirit, one needs to be aware of the Spirit's work. There are many areas where the Holy Spirit works in the life of a Christian. This sermon focuses on how we discern the presence of the Spirit through our emotions.
Three emotional indicators of the Holy Spirit's work:

  1. a positive emotion (joy, relief, peace, love) in response to apprehending spiritual truth, especially the truth of the Gospel
  2. a negative emotion (guilt, remorse, grief) in response to awareness of your own sin or suffering in the world
  3. an emotion that runs contrary to your worldly circumstances (supernatural peace when facing illness)

    4. Sermon Application

    • Why is it important to become aware of the Holy Spirit's work?
    • Give some examples of the Spirit's "undercover" work.
    • Do you believe emotions are a reliable indicator of the Holy Spirit? Why or why not?
    • How can you tell the difference between godly remorse over sin vs. feelings of accusation and condemnation?
    • Do you think lacking peace about a decision can be an indication of the Holy Spirit? How so?
