Suffering is a universal human experience. When a person suffers, it is common to ask "why?" But a more helpful question for the follower of Jesus Christ is to ask "what is this suffering for?"

From Paul's witness in 2 Corinthians 1:3 – 11, we see three answers:

  1. In suffering, God reveals his merciful character
  2. In suffering, God comforts us so that we can comfort others
  3. In suffering, God turns us away from self-reliance to greater dependence upon him
