Much More Than English

Jane talks with Josephine Chu Kai Shin, a licensed psychologist at USF’s Counseling Center, about mental health challenges that international students encounter while studying overseas. As a former international student herself, Josephine has interesting insights into both the challenges international students face and the strengths they bring with them.

Ari learns about Learning Resource Services and its many offerings for international students. Jordan Walters, Assistant Director of Learning Resource Services at INTO USF, tells us about the benefits of attending a consulting session and how to get the most out of university resources.

Jane talks to three international students about what it's like to work with an international recruiter when choosing a university. Andrea from Panama, Chayapatou from Thailand, and Mercy from Kenya give their advice to prospective students and share their experiences of finding the American university that was the best fit for them.

Jane learns about how USF's Office of International Risk and Safety works to ensure the safety of USF's students, faculty and staff when they travel overseas. Two members of the International Risk and Safety Team, Preston Drane and Gabriela Cuevas, talk about the various aspects of their work and give advice for anyone looking to set up a risk and safety office at a university.

Ari gets an inside look at language teaching internships from the perspective of a former intern, Travis Walters, and an internship coordinator, Dr. Matt Kessler. Together they discuss the University of South Florida MA in Applied Linguistics internship and the lessons they've learned during the program.

At the University of South Florida, the immigration process is about more than just getting a visa. In this episode, Jane interviews Marcia Taylor, Director of the Office of International Services at USF.
