The Good, Bad, and Ugly of Discipleship
We don't talk about the bad enough.
That's really where this episode started. Guy and I were at Georgia Movements recently, and we shared on this topic, the good, the bad, and the ugly of investing your life in people. The response was overwhelming. People were hungry to talk about it because so often in Christian culture, we only share the victories. We want to look good. We want discipleship to appear neat and tidy. But the truth? It isn't.
In Hebrews 11, we love to celebrate the Hall of Faith, the victories, the miracles, the by-faith moments. But tucked at the end of that same chapter is a list that doesn't get preached nearly as often: the ones who were tortured, imprisoned, stoned, sawed in two. And here's the thing, they were all commended for their faith too. The bad is still good.
In this episode, we get real about what it actually looks like to pour your life into people:
People will walk away. You can do everything right and still lose someone. I had a woman I was discipling, months of investment, real relationship, and then out of nowhere, she asked me not to reach out again. It stings. But it doesn't change what I'm called to do.
We've made our share of mistakes. Pushing too hard. Expecting people to look like us. Trying to follow a set order of tools when the Holy Spirit had a different plan. Growth means being honest about all of it.
Motivation matters more than results. As Guy put it: "We do the right things for the right reasons, no matter the results." If Christ's love is truly what's driving us, we don't quit when it gets hard.
"You cannot be like Jesus until you've been kissed by Judas."
Betrayal, hurt, and disappointment are part of this. So is choosing an unoffendable heart, having crucial conversations, and getting back up anyway. And the good? Watching generations of disciples, seeing fruit you never expected, and knowing you were faithful, that makes every hard moment worth it.
If you've been hurt in this process, or you're wondering how to even start making disciples, reach out. We'd love to connect you with community. You can email us at [email protected] or find everything else in the show notes.
